Many athletes from different sports are now forming a bridge into golf, and bursting on to the public scene in various pro-ams and other appearances.
One of them is none other than Steph Curry, a legendary US athlete who plays point guard for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA.
What his career away from the basketball court has shown is that Curry’s talents extend well beyond the hardwood. Away from the packed arenas and roaring fans, the superstar finds himself on the golf course, another field where he can keep his competitive juices flowing.
Curry’s connection to golf has roots in his childhood. Growing up in North Carolina, he was introduced to the sport by his father, Dell, who is a passionate golfer himself. Curry and his brother Seth would spend hours tagging along with their father to local courses. He started playing at the age of 10 and played in high school.

So just how good is he?
Curry’s handicap has hovered between +1 and +2 in recent years, placing him above the level of a scratch golfer and on par with low-level professionals. A plus handicap means you shoot below par, so we have a serious golfer on our hands here.
His quality on the fairways was never clearer than when playing with two-time major-winning star Bryson DeChambeau in one of his most recent YouTube uploads. The pair attempted to break 50 while playing together in the Texas Scramble format, off the forward tees as well.
They did break 50, and in the process, Curry mightily impressed DeChambeau and hit some shots and played some holes that were symptomatic of the handicap he holds.
As Curry has risen to stardom in his basketball career, he has never left golf behind. He is frequently seen teeing it up at pro-am events and celebrity tournaments, where he has consistently proven that his golf game is far more than a hobby.

His participation in the American Century Championship, the premier celebrity golf event at Lake Tahoe, has become a fixture of the summer sporting calendar. In 2023, Curry delivered one of the most memorable moments in the tournament’s history when he sank an eagle putt on the 18th hole to claim victory, punctuating the moment with a sprint down the fairway.

That tournament week was also underlined by a hole-in-one. The four-time NBA champion and two-time MVP played in a Korn Ferry Tour event in 2017 – the Ellie Mae Classic, where he missed the cut.
Beyond his personal game, Curry has worked to expand golf’s reach at an educational level. He has helped to fund the men’s and women’s golf programs at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
He also runs a golf initiative called Underrated, which is a business endeavour to provide equity, access, and opportunity to student-athletes from many communities. The idea is to identify talented young golfers and give them opportunities to shine.
