Which England footballers are the best at golf?

Who tore up the turf on the pitch and on the course?

Golf is a massively popular sport among professional footballers. More and more have become involved in the game both during and after their careers.

They often pop up in celebrity Pro-Ams before tournaments get underway and if you’re Gareth Bale, they can become invested in the sport on a regular basis.

Footballers are often the envy of mere mortals who can barely hit the crossbar from 12 yards, but it is common that they excel with a golf club in their hands too.

Without further delay, here are some of the best pro footballers at golf. Let us know if we have left out any names, and be sure to tell us on X! Please note that the handicaps we have listed are according to the most recent reports we could find…

Jimmy Bullard

Handicap: Scratch

The former Hull City, Wigan and Fulham star suffered terribly with injuries throughout the latter stages of his career, giving him plenty of time to hit the course. Bullard turned pro in 2013 after persistent knee injury troubles and appeared on the EuroPro Tour as recently as 2013.

He is now seen on the golf course more than ever. He is a presenter on Tubes and Ange Golf Life, a golf YouTube channel set up by Peter ‘Tubes’ Dale, a cult star from the now-defunct Soccer AM of Sky Sports.

John Terry

Handicap: 7.5

Former Chelsea and England defender John Terry played in the BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am at Wentworth last year where his handicap was down on the list at 7.5. However, it was also revealed a year before that his handicap had gone down as low as 1.1.

A bandit perhaps? Six weeks ago, Terry posted a picture of himself on the Swilcan Bridge on the Old Course at St Andrews as he ticked off a few of his bucket list venues.

Jamie Redknapp

Handicap: 4

After making 314 appearances for Liverpool, Tottenham and Southampton and 17 caps for England, Redknapp’s time was freed up to excel at golf, and he has certainly done that. It has been reported he is a member of Queenswood in Surrey.

Redknapp cites his dad as his golfing influence, once telling Sky Sports: “We used to play at a club close to where we lived near Bournemouth. We used to pitch up when the golf club had closed and play a few holes.”

Gary Lineker

Handicap: 5

Unfortunately for Gary Linekar, following a stellar playing career for Barcelona, Tottenham, Everton and Leicester, he developed chronic arthritis which he revealed in 2020 ruled him out of playing golf ever again.

“I don’t play any more because actually my fingers are so arthritic I can’t even hold a club. I don’t play but I have kept that membership,” he said.

“Only watching. I had to work very hard at it. I loved golf.”

Matt Le Tissier

Handicap: 1

‘Le God’ as he is known on the South coast can be found in many a Pro-Am. “My biggest indulgence is my golf clubs,” Le Tissier once told the Telegraph. “I like to have nice clubs and the latest driver, I have numerous putters that I snap regularly.”

It was reported three years ago that the former Southampton star got down to a handicap index of 1.4 and once, he played golf 19 days in a row. Oh, how fun it sounds to be a retired Premier League footballer.

Alan Shearer

Handicap: 6

The Premier League’s all-time top scorer has spent a lot of time on the course with his foundation. The former England international has previously hosted charity golf days at Close House, Northumberland.

Nine months ago on the YouTube scene, he was filmed playing at the Northeast venue ahead of the Asian Tour’s International Series event. Shearer has also previously played on camera with former World No.1 Lee Westwood.

Harry Kane

Handicap: Scratch

England and Bayern Munich bagsman Harry Kane once joked he would “never say never” to a career in golf after he hangs up his boots. Our country’s record goalscorer is down to scratch it seems, so he evidently carries his form from the pitch to the fairways.

“I guess the ideal career would be a World Cup, a Super Bowl and maybe a Masters green jacket.”

Gareth Bale

Handicap: Scratch

He’s not English of course, but why not throw Gareth Bale into this mix? Bale played in the BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am last year, the sheet said he played off a handicap of 0.5. Again, another legendary player who has transferred his brilliance to the short grass and greens.

In January 2022, the former Real Madrid and Wales star agreed to become a global ambassador for The R&A in support of its activities to inspire new audiences around the world into playing golf.
