First Impressions

My initial thoughts of these shoes were completely tainted by prejudice over the looks. This type of boot is never going to win prizes for aesthetics, and they certainly have a utilitarian look to them. I, however had them for a few days before actually testing them and my thoughts evolved. By the time it came to put them on I had had time to consider the merits of golf boots and was quite looking forward to trying them. Let’s face it, playing in grotty weather can be unpleasant enough without throwing cold, soggy feet into the mix.

Looking at the tech in these boots, they are fully waterproof with a micro-fibre mid-cut comfort upper and EVA cushioned midsole and cushioned insole. The sole has seven spikes and provides traction control. They come with a 1 year waterproof guarantee.

On Course Testing

These were definitely some of the bigger shoes for the size. This may be to accommodate thick socks or even two pairs, which could be an asset. Testing them in the summer, however, I was wearing a thickish pair of sports socks, and I had to tie the laces fairly tightly, and they were still quite roomy. On, they were moderately comfortable but nowhere near any golf shoes. Walking in them, was again moderately comfortable but not extremely so.

They are quite a sturdy boot and provide good support when walking, including over rough terrain. The spiked rubber outsole did not look anything out of the ordinary for a golf shoe but provided good grip. I did not have the opportunity to try them in soaking conditions, but on wet grass the were reassuringly grippy. There was reasonable thickness and support in the sole but they did bend a little compared to shoes with rigid inserts in the sole.

I had reservations about making a full swing with these and how restricting they may feel. They were not too bad. They definitely feel different to golf shoes but not necessarily significantly worse. By virtue of the boot style, they provide very good overall support, especially around the ankle.

Having worn these while playing and with time to consider these boots, I came to realise that these have been designed to fulfil a particular function. They cannot be compared to golf shoes. They fill a need for waterproof footwear in bad weather where golf shoes will provide insufficient protection.

The 19th hole

I came to warm to these the more I used them. They are certainly not the most comfortable pair of golfing footwear I have worn, but that is not the point of them. They will keep my feet dry and warm in the most challenging ground and weather, and I will be using them when that time inevitably comes.
