  • Cuater the legend golf shoes review: the details

This review was conducted in 2023 and pleasantly surprised Jonathan Taylor with how well the shoe performed. Currently priced at just £72, it could be the perfect pair for anyone seeking a quality all round golf shoe. Act quickly before your preferred colour or size sells out! Please note, the review below has been kept as is when written back in 2023….

Cuater entered the golf shoe market just in 2020 and so is not as well established as many better-known shoe brands. The brand offers a select range of footwear which has a simple focus; namely comfort and style with the technology you need and nothing extra you don’t.

So, how do you pronounce the name of the brand? Well, think of Jonathan Ross saying ‘crater’ or, if you don’t know who I’m talking about, then it’s ‘kwaiter’. Here we test Cuater The Legend, which, along with The Ringer, is badged as their premium performance tour golf shoe.

First Impressions

Out of the box, this shoe presented an absolutely classic look. The clean lines, the stitching, the lacing system – it all looks just right. I tested the black model with a contrasting grey sole. There is also a version in white.

The upper is constructed from premium full-grade leather – it certainly looks and feels to be premium. The Cuater golf shoes classic looks are enhanced by very little in the way of branding, just a metallic ‘C’ to the side of the handsome lacing system and some subtle embossing on the tongue.

There is some smart stitching and some small perforations to the outer and inner of the mid-portion of the shoe, which add interest and breathability. There’s a grey leather lining to the interior of the shoe which does not look quite as padded as some similar shoes so I’ll be interested to see how it performs comfort-wise.

I was pleased to see a robust heel piece. Turning over to look at the sole design, there are nine removable spikes per shoe as well as over fifty small moulded spikes. Breaks in the outsole offer flexion to the forefoot and also help to control weight. Talking of weight, each shoe came in at 425 grammes, which is lighter than the average proper leather spiked shoe.

cuater the legend golf shoe review

The UK size 7.5 (Euro 41) standard width fitted my usually sized 7.5 wide foot extremely comfortably out of the box. My concern regarding potential lack of padding was completely unwarranted. I think this model runs true to size which has been my experience with all Cuater models I have tested. However, if you have particularly wide feet, it may be sensible to go up half a size.

On Course Testing

Testing was carried out over one round in damp conditions underfoot (but no rain) on my home heathland course.

I found the shoe to be extremely comfortable from the outset. The leather upper felt supportive and flexed nicely in play – I put this down to the outsole design. There was a springy, cushioned feeling walking between shots. Cuater talk about their Sweet Spot technology Cushioning throughout the molded insole and I have to say that the shoe felt much more comfortable than I expected from the classic design.

Performance, in terms of traction and stability, was first class. The heel piece provided a locked-in feel and the construction of the shoe offered excellent torsional rigidity in the mid section.

Although it was damp underfoot, there was no rain and so it’s not possible to comment on waterproof construction but I don’t imagine there would be any issues here. Similarly I played in pretty cool conditions so cannot comment on breathability either.

The 19th hole

The configuration of the outsole really means that this is a shoe that belongs on the course rather than the clubhouse. So this is not the shoe for the individual who prefers to put on their footwear at home.

I have to say that I think Cuater have produced another winner with this shoe. No, it’s not for the golfer who wants their shoes to look like a Formula 1 racing car. But if you value comfort, understated style and thoughtful technology, then I recommend that you give serious consideration to this brand and this model.

premium golf shoes

The leather upper will need looking after to maintain the appearance and behaviour of the shoe but, given the clean lines of the shoe, I would expect that to be straightforward enough.

I think that the construction and performance of the shoe justifies the pricing and I fully expect that I will be wearing this shoe over the coming months.
