The sight of Tony Finau popping his ankle back into place after celebrating his hole-in-one at the par-3 contest had us all wincing.
It seemed unlikely he’d be able to tee it up the following day, let alone be among the early leaders.
And on closer inspection, it seems Finau had opted for a new shoe during the par-3 festivities – which we suspect may be staying in the locker for the rest of the tournament.
We saw Finau wearing the Nike Lunar Control Vapor 2 during his practice rounds.
But for the par-3 he was wearing what looked like a pair of Nike Roshe golf shoes – a lightweight spikeless model.
Unsurprisingly he was back in the Lunar Control Vapor 2’s for Thursday’s round where he shot a superb 68.
Callaway take the honours in opening tee shots
I’m always keen to see what drivers Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player are using for their ceremonial opening tee shots.
So much so that I can tell you Nicklaus was using the same model from last year – the Callaway GBB Epic.
Player on the other hand had the Callaway Rogue. Maybe he got a good trade-in deal for the brand new model?
Tiger equipment watch
A frustrating day for the four-time champion. At at one stage it was looking like it could have been a lot worse.
All in all he’ll be pleased to get the first round out of the way without hurting his chances too much.
“I played in a major championship again, but also the fact that I was – I got myself back in this tournament, and I could have easily let it slip away,” Woods said.
“I fought hard to get it back in there, and I’m back in this championship. There’s a lot of holes to be played.”
Where does he need to improve? Off the tee.
If that first round is as bad as it gets then Woods could well be up there on Sunday afternoon.
Bubba’s Green High Tops
We’d all been looking forward to these right?
Let’s just hope he makes the cut as he has a pink pair of the G/Fore models in store for us.
And, as promised, here are Phil Mickelson’s G/Fore shoes complete with his famous celebration from his 2004 victory.
