Hannah Holden and Dan Murphy put the latest Ecco Biom model through its paces. Here’s what they think
Ecco’s hybrid line-up keeps going from strength to strength. So how has it been upgraded for 2022? For this review I’ve roped in my colleague Dan Murphy to get the lowdown on the Biom C4.
“The looks and style are familiar and unmistakably Ecco,” Dan explains. “The flashes of bold colours, the obvious technological features and the high-quality components are all Ecco calling cards.
“However, as soon as I picked the shoes up, and certainly by the time I had slipped them on and fastened the laces, it was clear that this is a more substantial shoe than I am used to from Ecco.”

The Biom C4 is all about breathability. While the funky sole may look great, it also is a key technology.
The centre-coloured section is what Ecco are calling an “exhaust grid”. It pulls fresh air into the sole of your foot, allowing golfers to stay cool and comfortable throughout their round.
The sole structure is also designed to keep the foot in a natural position – low to the ground – to offer stability and control.
For grip the sole is designed with three different sections one to provide stability and traction, another for ground penetration and the final section for rotational support.
Ecco use a unique fluidform technology to bind the shoe together. This involves using specialist fluids to bond the upper and sole together without the need for stitched or glued assemblies.
The upper is crafted from premium performance leather and has a Gore-Tex surround construction.
Around the heel and the laces of the shoe we see a stretchy mesh sock construction for extra comfort. Inside the shoe there is an OrthoLite insole for long-term cushioning. This is removable to make the shoe width wider.

“Bear with me here. I know you have read a hundred golf shoe reviews referencing comfort.
“I find Ecco are in a class of their own in this area. It’s been suggested to me that Bioms just fit my particular foot shape very well. I can’t speak for you and your feet, but the C4s are a dream to wear for me.
“A significant new feature is the mesh sock – it works in the same way as football sock boots.
“I guess one of the biggest challenges for show manufacturers is the balance between comfort and stability. It’s very hard to offer both at the same time.
“Well, the Biom C4s give this a real go – there is certainly more shoe and more stability than previous Biom models I have worn.
“Crucially, you do feel low to the ground in these. I don’t think, as a golfer, you want to feel like you are an inch taller when you put your golf shoes on and you don’t with the C4s.
“It’s too early to comment on durability – in my previous experience a major Ecco strength – but with a Gore-Tex surround construction and something called an ‘Ecco Exhaust Grip’ to push fresh air towards the soles of your feet, you can certainly rely on a breathable as well as waterproof shoe.”

“Worth the significant investment? It’s a yes from me – the Biom C4s are a fitting (pun intended) addition to the Biom Hybrid lineage.”
