Bushnell Phantom Golf GPS review: First Impressions
This is a neat and compact device – it is simple to provide key yardages in a really small user friendly package.
One of the best things about the new Bushnell Phantom is the free Bushnell GPS app you get with your purchase. The app provides fantastic graphics and technology to help enhance your round of golf.
Bushnell Phantom Golf GPS review: The Technology
The Phantom is designed to provide a simple and easy to use distance measuring device. It comes preloaded with over 36,000 golf courses, providing distances to the front, middle and back of greens, as well as showing distances to hazards. It also features bluetooth to allow connection to the Bushnell App.
The new bite technology features an extra strong magnet and clip, meaning the Phantom can be clipped on to your belt, golf bag or trolley for easy viewing.
The Bushnell app has a variety of functions, from tracking your golf scores to updating golf courses on your compatible GPS device.
You can also use your phone to act as a GPS, so you’ll see great graphics of the hole as well as all the on course measurements. A really cool added feature is the ability to see course flyovers, which is especially helpful when playing a course for the first time.
The swing pro feature allows you to analyse your swing speed and tempo and a pedometer also tracks your daily step count as well as your average speed, pace and distance when walking the course.
Bushnell Phantom Golf GPS review: NCG Verdict
I found the Phantom GPS so easy to use. It’s really simple button design means it is easy to navigate around and use the different features.
Having the distances to hazards such as bunkers was extremely useful, especially since lots of new bunkers have been added to my course over winter.
Personally I probably wouldn’t clip this on my belt as I still feel the device can easily detach from the clip if you catch it against something. However, it worked great when clipping to the side of my golf bag and really sped up my play when I didn’t have to delve into my bag to find out a yardage.
The bite technology means it can be clipped to any other metal surface, such as a buggy.
Often GPS’ are known for having a shorter battery life than lasers but I was really impressed with the Phantom, which easily got round 36 holes without having to be recharged.
The addition of bluetooth to connect to your phone is excellent and provides so many additional features that players of all abilities can benefit from. Downloading the app and connecting it to the Phantom GPS device was super easy and allows you to update and add courses as required.
The app can also be used independently from your chosen GPS device should you not have it with you. The app is also available with Bushnell laser devices so if you are stuck between choosing a GPS or a laser this is definitely a solution for you.
The on course graphics are really simple and vibrant and the flyovers make it clear how to play blind shots. One other function I found particularly impressive was the ability to track your swing speed and tempo. With the gains in driving distance we are seeing on tour so many more players are tracking and try to improve their swing speed, so I think this will appeal to a lot of golfers.
This is a great simple and portable device that is a great GPS option for all golfers and the addition of the Bushnell app just makes the purchase of this GPS even more appealing.
