Callaway Eco Stripe Fleece Quarter-Zip Pullover review: First Impressions
It’s Callaway’s 40th anniversary this year, and year after year they continue to be champions in the textile industry. In fact, Ely Callaway Jr. had a background in both textile and wine industries, and after selling his vineyards, he renamed Hickory Sticks USA to Callaway Golf. And here we are.
There’s something about the 2022 Callaway autumn-winter range that makes it so identifiable when you pick a piece of their kit up. The build of the products are steadfast, perfect for the elements at the time of the year which they will undoubtedly be worn during.
The first thing I noticed after unpacking the mid layer was its daring double-zip feature down the middle of the fleece. Many people still struggle to understand the logic of having a pocket above waist height, especially when they’re playing golf. But give it a chance; this pocket is the fleece’s only one, and it holds its own nicely.
How many times have you accidentally dropped an item out of your pockets onto the floor and lost it? Put those valuables closer to eye level and watch the difference. Sure, the lack of pockets won’t be to everyone’s taste, but the positioning of it was a pleasant change from where they are usually found.
Overall, Callaway have opted for a traditional yet casual styling here. It’s neat; really neat, actually. The mid-layer has a subtle striped pattern to it that complements the light grey logo on the side of the sleeve. In one sense, it has Callaway written all over it.
Callaway Eco Stripe Fleece Quarter-Zip Pullover review: On The Course
When it comes to mid layers, I’m after three things: They have to repel any sweat, they can’t impede my swing and they need to be quick drying. I am 5ft 10, and wear a UK size small top, and the fleece ticked all three boxes. It’s got warmth to boot thanks to the thermal brushed interior, but not too much so you sweat buckets. It’s the perfect option to wear on a chilly autumnal day.
Performance wise, the fleece is really easy to swing in and the Swing Tech 4 way stretch fabric helped me strike the ball cleaner than any mid layer I’ve tried before.
Although I found myself defending the lack of waist-high pockets earlier, they would be a nice addition to the fleece, as I’m sure most people will agree if they choose to wear the mid layer when they’re out playing.
There’s no fancy buttons or lavish features to the fleece, it’s just nice and simple. It’s there to keep you warm and not be noticed when you’re playing golf. And what more do you want from a mid layer?
The fabric is ideal as it doesn’t wrinkle easily. It’s also really easy to fold up to slot into one of those big side pockets in your golf bag.
Callaway Eco Stripe Fleece Quarter-Zip Pullover review: The 19th hole
Whilst this mid layer has such a simple, traditional styling to it, I’d look to only keep using it on the course. When it comes to golf, I do favour build over beauty, whereas off the course I do sometimes find myself falling foul of quite the opposite. Having said that, when the weather gets really cold, it could be great to pop under a coat to keep you warm.
