Abacus Cleek flex trouser review: First Impressions

I don’t know if it’s true but this year it seems to me that we have gone from pretty cool and often miserable weather to the height of summer. So we can put away the cold weather gear and get out our summer golfing wardrobe. For me, warm weather ‘legwear’ has usually meant lightweight chinos or shorts. I’ve never particularly been a fan of smarter-end golf trousers so I was interested to open up the package containing the Abacus Cleek flex trouser.

As with just about all Abacus stuff, the initial impression was of a quality material and a stylish design. it is constructed from so-called Drycool fabric comprising 96% polyester and 4% Spandex (the latter for stretchiness). I tested the version in navy which is one of three colours currently available – all somewhat on the dark side – but easy enough to pair with your polo shirt of choice.

Abacus Cleek flex trouser review: On Course Testing

In trouser fittings, I am generally a pretty consistent 32-inch waist, 29-inch inside leg, and this garment fitted nicely with quite a slim cut and a narrow trouser bottom.

The waistband is nice and stretchy, so there’s a bit of leeway with the waist size. There is a two button closure at the top of a zippered fly. I was pleased to see that there was ‘gripper’ waistband which helps to keep your shirt tucked in position. And these trousers were a delight to wear. They feel comfortable next to the skin, have a bit of stretch and certainly kept me cool in some of the unseasonably warm conditions of late.

There are four roomy pockets with some subtle branding just above the right rear pocket.

One other ‘plus’ point became apparent when I was caught in a brief unexpected shower and these trousers got soaked. However when the rain stopped and the sun came out they dried off in super quick time with not loss of shape. I thought that was pretty impressive.

So there you are. Here is another first-rate piece of apparel from Abacus that is going to get plenty of use over the summer months. It really is the ideal warm weather trouser with excellent performance and comfort. As well as performing really well on the course, they look perfectly fine off the course with no excessive logos or branding to give the game away.

And lastly, they are extremely straightforward to care for; just a low temperature wash followed by line drying (rather than tumble dryer for some reason) and no ironing required.

Fit: True to Size/Small/Large
Comfort: 9.5/10
Value for Money: 9.5/10
Sizes: Waist 28-42. Inside leg 30-34.
Colours: Navy, Grey or Black.
