TaylorMade Flextech Waterproof Stand Bag review

What's new? How much does it cost? And how does it perform? Nicola Slater brings you the low down on the TaylorMade Flextech Waterproof Stand Bag..

The Flextech bag by TaylorMade has been one of their signature golf bags for a good few years now. The 2023 aims to provide the same great quality but with a fresh look. I took it out on the course to see how it performed.

5 star review

NCG Summary

The TaylorMade FlexTech bag is a stand bag but very much feels like a cart/stand bag hybrid due to its size. The FlexTech is also incredibly stable on a trolley thanks to its added cart strap pass-through slot.

The material of this bag feels of great quality that isn’t thick and bulky but very durable and waterproof.

The added details of water-tight zips are a great addition and very much needed during those heavy showers.

PROS

  • Plenty of padding
  • Waterproof
  • Lots of storage space
  • Sits great on a trolley

CONS

  • Heavier than other bags

First Impressions

Weirdly, I have never owned a waterproof bag. I’ve always had this huge panic when it starts to rain as I try and find my waterproofs, umbrella and of course a waterproof bag cover. With this in mind, I was very excited to finally get my hands on a waterproof stand bag.

From first picking it up I could tell that this bag felt slightly heavier than recent stand bags that I have owned. It weighs 2.1kg which isn’t actually that heavy. It is however one of the largest stand bags I’ve ever come across and with that, you do get plenty of storage. The FlexTech offers 6 pockets of varying sizes, all including waterproof zips. There is also an additional slot for a water bottle.

I tested the Gunmetal version and really liked the look of it. The bag is all one colour with white and black detailing around the zips. I was very impressed with the detail that TaylorMade had gone to, to make this bag as watertight as possible. All of the zips had a waterproof seal and a cover to make sure that any excess water didn’t get in via the zip.

TaylorMade does offer this bag in a range of different colours including, red, black, navy and gunmetal as previously mentioned. Each looks almost a block colour to the eye but up close there is a hexagonal pattern on the largest pocket. The design shows off the fact that it’s not just fabric as it has a slightly shiny finish that water will just run off.

The TaylorMade Flextech waterproof also came with a standard rain hood that was on the same waterproof fabric as the rest of the bag which is great.

NCG Verdict

I’ve been out on the course with this bag a good few times now so I feel like I’ve had a good chance to try it. One of the first things I found when loading it was that the pockets are quite tight. They do hold quite a lot of stuff, especially the largest side pocket but those front pockets can be quite scratchy and tight to get your hands in and out of. I understand that this is down to the waterproof zips which are required on a waterproof bag such as this one. The umbrella holder was located on the side of the bag and my umbrella did seem to stick out quite a lot in comparison to other bags that I have owned however this was just a slight observation and nothing too concerning.

The TaylorMade Flextech waterproof stand bag features a five-way top divider for clubs to sit in. I liked that all of my clubs weren’t squashed together, especially with those slots being quite generous in size. On top of this is a handy plastic surround handle. There is also a handle on the front of the bag which is very padded. This makes getting the bag in and out of the car easier alongside the handle on the bottom of the bag.

It’s unfortunately typical that when you want it to rain to test out how waterproof the bag is, it doesn’t rain.

One thing I did find was that when I put it down on a wet tile next to the putting green the legs slid quite a lot. Unlike some other bags, there is only a small rubber grip on the bottom of the legs.

As someone who likes to swap between carrying and using a trolley, I liked that this bag sat great on my Powakaddy trolley. The Flextech Waterproof even had a cart strap pull-through built in which allowed the trolley strap to go through and fasten rather than covering part of a pocket. This is something you only really see on cart bags and so I thought it was a handy addition. As someone who is a member and plays a lot of golf on hilly courses, this is a bonus to help keep the bag stable and secure. One thing to note is that unlike some bags this one doesn’t have a strap to secure the legs, however when on my trolley they never came out.

As this is a carry bag I did also get the opportunity to carry it a couple of times on the slightly cooler days. I found that the straps were very supportive and easy to adjust. The straps also had a great amount of padding in so it was very comfortable on my shoulders. There were also some padded sections in the area where the bag rested on my back. What I would say is, as this is quite a large carry bag it might not be suited to every player for carrying.

Overall, the Flextech Waterproof felt quite luxurious with plenty of padding in the straps and in the single carry handle on the top of the bag. If you’re looking for a hybrid cart/stand bag this is the perfect option. Unfortunately, this bag does come with a hefty price tag but it is definitely worth the long-term investment as it feels incredibly durable.
