Original Penguin Check Print polo shirt review: First Impressions
They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover and I’m a little ashamed to admit I did that at first with the Original Penguin Check Print polo shirt. When it arrived, tightly packed in its plastic covering, I initially dismissed it.
I thought it was too bright. I thought it would be too much on the golf course. Then I unwrapped it and unfurled it from the packaging. And then I changed my mind completely.
Yes, this might be a little on the adventurous side for some of your tastes. Yes, its bold check pattern may raise an eyebrow or two among some of the more traditional members of the clubhouse.
But I quite like to stand out these days on the course, and there will certainly be no missing me in this stylish polo.
Onto some technical details and a polyester and elastane mix is regulation now in the golf apparel business. What’s different here is that 30 per cent of that polyester has been recycled as clothing looks to become more sustainable.

Original Penguin Check Print polo shirt review: NCG Review
I did enjoy the first double take as I unveiled this beauty in the car park but, such is the nature of golf clothing these days, the reaction wasn’t one of complete stop-and-stare.
It should be, but not for the reasons you might expect. That’s because the Original Penguin Check Print polo shirt is a very high quality top indeed. The material is light to touch, a true technical feeling fabric, and the promised moisture wicking properties perform very well.
The first time I wore this on the course, at Scarcroft Golf Club, was the first time this year there had been any real warmth in the sky. It was pleasant enough for me to consider donning sunscreen but any perspiration on my part was easily handled.
The sizing is true for me, but I’d be on the thinner side of a medium fit. I prefer a top to be relatively snug so, depending on your body shape, you might want to consider sizing up if you prefer something a little looser.
It’s very comfortable to swing in, without any resistance, chafing, or rubbing, and the material stays nicely in position. It doesn’t ride, or tug, and it stays comfortably within a belt. When you are hitting a shot, it feels like the fabric is reacting to your swing rather than providing resistance to it.
On the course, it’s generally faultless.

Original Penguin Check Print polo shirt review: The 19th hole
As I’ve wandered into middle age, I’ve quite enjoyed finding some colours that aren’t simply blue, grey, or black. Even catering for those who like their clothing to be on the John Daly scale, you’ll still stand out pretty brightly in the average clubhouse wearing the Original Penguin Check Print polo shirt.
An eyebrow or two might be raised, but is that a bad thing? It makes a change from being another person sat sipping a pint in blue, black, or grey.
Durability-wise, I think you’ll also be doing fine with this polo shirt. Some technical tops just invite the washing machine to click the fabric or, worse still, shrink it. A couple of washes in and this garment remains bobble and click free, has kept its shape really well on drying, and has yet to need even a cursory brush with an iron.
From being initially wary that it was all just a bit too much, the Original Penguin Check Print polo shirt is fast becoming my favourite piece of golf clothing. And with the warmer weather getting closer with every passing day, it’s about to get a lot of action out on the course.
