The small changes that will help you drive the ball further

Are you struggling to keep up with your playing partners? Elite coach Dan Whittaker shares his advice on how you can make the distance gains you've been craving

It’s been proven that hitting the ball longer equates to lower scores and there is no better time than the off-season to work on this part of your game. Watch my video below and learn how to drive the ball further in 2020…

How to drive the ball further: The main points

On the rare occasion you’re presented with the chance to open your shoulders and give it a little extra with the driver, it’s nice to know you have that shot in your locker. And really it comes down to the basics.

In my video with Andy, we added 10 yards to his tee-ball just by making some set-up tweaks.

First, I got him to tee it slightly higher and widen his stance to encourage a more upwards strike. Then, a simple shoulder adjustment and he was ready to go.

What this does is create the ideal conditions to stay behind the ball and really launch it. It might take some practice before you can rely on this shot on the course, but it’s a useful tool to add to your arsenal.

Most golfers operate below their potential when it comes to how far they hit their driver. And the majority could make a more permanent increase in length if they put in the time to understand how power is created – it was certainly true in Andy’s case.

He creates good separation in his downswing but going back, wasn’t loading and storing power as well as he could.

Want to learn Dan’s other key principles for generating power? You’ll have to watch the video…
