NCG SUMMARY

The Teardrop TD-1 putter impressed me with its innovative Roll-Face technology, outstanding alignment aids, and classic blade design. I think it’s an excellent choice for golfers seeking precision and consistency in their putting, with a touch of elegance and craftsmanship. While it may not be as widely available as more prominent brands, its performance is on par, if not superior, in many aspects. Ideal for those who value precision and classic styling in their short game.

PROS

  • Exceptional roll consistency across the face
  • Love the classic blade design
  • Soft feel

CONS

  • Blade design may not suit those preferring mallet putters

TearDrop TD-1 Putter Review: First Impressions

Classic look

The Teardrop TD-1 putter is the definition of a classic looking blade putter with a sleek, black finish that offers simplicity. Its compact head design is beautifully framed, offering an ideal alignment view at address. The attention to detail is very evident, with fine engravings and a minimalist design emphasises its premium feel. The head cover, equally well-crafted, adds to the overall high-quality impression.

Leading Edge Alignment System

I think the alignment system on the TD-1 is particularly noteworthy. Featuring a long white line that runs front to back, coupled with what Teardrop calls the ‘Leading Edge Alignment System,’ the putter is designed to eliminate doubt when addressing the golf ball on the greens.

A crisp white line at the very edge of the top line contrasts sharply against the black head, making it easier to square up the face with precision. This visual clarity is particularly helpful for golfers who utilise line markings on their ball, it just gives players a bit more confidence to commit to a line when putting.

NCG Verdict

Helping with shorter putts

I tested the TD-1 across a range of distances and it revealed its particular strengths. On shorter putts, I thought the alignment technology worked well, making it easy to square up and even drain putts with consistency. For me, the combination of the leading-edge alignment and the rear white line provided a strong visual reference, reducing the margin for error.

Roll-face technology

At the heart of the TD-1’s performance is its innovative Roll-Face technology. Unlike traditional flat-faced putters, the TD-1’s face is subtly curved, lower loft at the bottom and higher loft at the top. This design is engineered to minimise launch variations across the face, basically ensuring a smoother and consistent roll regardless of where you hit it off the face.

I found this to be particularly beneficial on long putts, where off-centred strikes are more common. During my testing, I also found the putter delivered exceptional roll characteristics, with noticeably reduced skidding and hopping right off the face.

What about longer putts?

On longer putts, the Roll-Face technology truly came into its own. Even on off-center strikes, the ball tracked well, maintaining speed and direction. This level of forgiveness is rare for a blade putter, often associated with the precision and touch of skilled players. However, the TD-1 seems to bridge that gap, offering both the feel of a blade and the forgiveness typically reserved for mallet designs.

Feel off the face

The feel of the TD-1 is equally impressive. The face is soft, providing excellent feedback and a satisfying sound upon impact. Whether striking short putts or lagging from distance, the putter maintains its balance and control, instilling confidence even on tricky greens.

Final Verdict

A fantastic blade option

Overall, the Teardrop TD-1 putter is a standout performer in the blade category, combining classic design with innovative roll technology. Its alignment features make it particularly appealing for golfers who struggle with setup and alignment, while the Roll-Face technology enhances roll consistency across all strike points. With its soft feel, quality craftsmanship, and strong alignment aids, the TD-1 is a compelling option for players seeking both style and substance.

I think the TD-1 is well worth considering for those who appreciate a classic blade look but want the modern benefits of enhanced alignment and roll performance. It is a testament to the brand’s commitment to making a successful comeback.

About the author

Callaway Epic Max driver review
Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
