TaylorMade’s newest wedge line, the MG5, features plenty of new technology and performance benefits. It shows the evolution of TaylorMade wedges as it brings enhanced feel, increased spin, and unmatched grind variety to the hands of golfers at every level.

This family of wedges is packed with updates built to satisfy the demands of elite players like Collin Morikawa and Tiger Woods, while still delivering playable forgiveness for the everyday golfer.

Let’s take a closer look at the technology, line-up, and all the details that matter. Here’s what you need to know before putting them in play…

TaylorMade MG5 Wedges: The Technology

The MG5 wedges are fully forged from a billet of soft carbon steel, which is a first for the Milled Grind series. TaylorMade’s forging process includes heating and bending the steel into an L-shape, rough and precision forging, CNC-machining of the grind, face, grooves, and hosel, and finishing with cosmetic detailing.

New to the MG family, the saw-milled grooves have steeper walls that push right up against the legal limits of groove geometry. These are engineered to deliver maximum spin, especially on shorter shots, allowing players more control when chipping around or hitting into the greens.

Continuing TaylorMade’s commitment to wet-weather performance, the MG5 wedges employ the brand’s familiar RAW face finish paired with an all-new Spin Tread Technology. These spin treads channel water away from the face, much like all-season tyres do on your car. They in turn deliver 13% more spin in wet conditions compared to the previous wedge, the MG4.

TaylorMade MG5 Wedges: The Line-up

TaylorMade has introduced three different grinds or their MG5 line-up. Here’s a closer look at each…

Who is it for?: For those who want to play with Tiger style wedges.

TaylorMade MG5 SC Grind

Main Attributes: This grind offers the ultimate greenside versatility as well as consistent stability on full shots with heel and toe relief.

Who is it for?: Designed for golfers who play in all different types of conditions.

TaylorMade MG5 SB Grind

Main Attributes: TaylorMade has equipped it with a gentle 4-way camber which creates smooth turf interaction and more forgiveness on bunker and half shots.

Who is it for?: Suitable for an array of different swing styles as well as different turf interactions.

TaylorMade MG5 SX Grind

Main Attributes: Designed with the widest sole in the MG5 line-up for more consistent bunker play. The bounce is also designed to be consistent so the face of the club can be manipulated better.

About the author

Max Mcvittie

A bit of a late bloomer to the game of golf, Max fell in love with the sport when he attended Saturday coaching sessions down at his local golf club after being inspired by friends and family members.

Max has remained a member of Eden Golf Club in Carlisle for a number of years now as he looks to get his handicap down into single figures. Most of his golfing career has been spent battling a permanent slice off the tee, which has led to some ugly rounds.

Having studied at the University of Sunderland, Max is starting out his dream career in sports journalism. During his time at university, he picked up valuable work experience at Reach PLC, BBC Radio Cumbria and GiveMeSport, whilst also getting work published in the Teesside Live. He also spent time working at a local weekly newspaper, Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser, as a general news reporter partially covering some local sport just north of the border in Langholm.

Max has just started his journey with the NCG working as the assistant equipment editor. He looks forwarded to reviewing the latest golf equipment, taking up an interest in reviews when buying his first golf club, a Cleveland RTX wedge.

With his bag not going under too many changes throughout the last few years, Max carries an M3 driver, Titleist GT3 Fairway Wood, M2 hybrid, a set of M2 irons, Callaway Jaws wedges and a TaylorMade Spider putter. And yes, Max is a bit of a self-proclaimed TaylorMade fan boy.
