I’m yet to be convinced that trainer-like golf shoes have transcended generations just yet, but if there’s one to bridge the gap then I’d be confident this might just be it

Introduction

Finding a golf shoe that strikes a golden balance between comfort, style and stability is no easy task. Believe me, I’ve been through my fair share of shoes trying.

But J.Lindeberg has made it seem relatively easy. Their Ace Low-Top Golf Sneaker, as they are known, do all of the above and, from where I’m sitting, are the perfect summer option.

Despite their casual looks, there is no sucking on performance here. Stability is strong and comfort is top-notch. Here’s my full review…

NCG Summary

I find that there really is only one place to start with golf shoes like these and that’s with their looks. Yes, not everyone will like them but then again no everyone likes pineapple on pizza!

For my money, these are the ideal looking golf shoes. Not overly casual that they look like gym shoes but still don’t venture into the stiffness I think a lot of traditionally styled alternatives fall into the trap of being.

Elsewhere, I was extremely impressed by the comfort. There’s no let-up at any point during the round in this regard. The good news is for summer; no issues with the heat either.

Key benefits and downsides

Key benefitsDownsides
Comfort – No matter the course, terrain or weather these were equally as comfortable on a multitude of different surfacesThere isn’t any!
Style – Big fan of the minimalist design. Classy and premium yet remains understated
Versatile – These are my new go-to shoes for spring, summer and autumn golf

First Impressions

The moment I opened the box, I was instantly impressed. These shoes look even better in person. The clean, minimalist design, combined with the neutral white and taupe colourway, gives them a premium and versatile appearance.

The materials feel high quality, the stitching is crisp, and they strike the perfect balance between casual and refined. They immediately make you want to lace them up and head out onto the course.

How I undertook the review

I wore the shoes during rounds at my home course, Alwoodley, and at a charity day at Moor Allerton in Leeds.

The two courses offer very different tests. Moor Allerton is much hillier, with plenty of uphill and downhill lies, while the temperature topped 30°C, making it an ideal test for comfort and breathability.

Alwoodley, although flatter, is a heathland course with plenty of undulating fairways, providing a different challenge under slightly cooler conditions.

What I found

The shoes were extremely comfortable on both courses and coped brilliantly with the hot conditions at Moor Allerton. I’m a size 9, and the fit was spot on straight out of the box.

I normally play in soft spikes, so I was slightly concerned about the grip. However, the unique outsole design, which cleverly incorporates the JLindeberg logo, provided excellent traction. It gave me the confidence to swing freely without worrying about my feet slipping or moving during the swing.

Although I’ve only played a couple of rounds in them, the quality of the materials and stitching suggests they’ll be durable and stand up well over time.

I think these would make an excellent choice for spring, summer and autumn golf. The ventilation in the toe area keeps your feet cool in warm weather, although it does mean they probably wouldn’t be my first choice for wet winter rounds.

NCG Final Say

Overall, these are an outstanding pair of golf shoes. They’re incredibly stylish, exceptionally comfortable and versatile enough to wear both on and off the course.

You could easily finish your round and head straight to the clubhouse or pub without anyone realising you’re still wearing golf shoes.

They’ve certainly earned a big thumbs up from me and a well-deserved 5-star rating.

About the author

Max Mcvittie

A bit of a late bloomer to the game of golf, Max fell in love with the sport when he attended Saturday coaching sessions down at his local golf club after being inspired by friends and family members.

Max has remained a member of Eden Golf Club in Carlisle for a number of years now as he looks to get his handicap down into single figures. Most of his golfing career has been spent battling a permanent slice off the tee, which has led to some ugly rounds.

Having studied at the University of Sunderland, Max is starting out his dream career in sports journalism. During his time at university, he picked up valuable work experience at Reach PLC, BBC Radio Cumbria and GiveMeSport, whilst also getting work published in the Teesside Live. He also spent time working at a local weekly newspaper, Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser, as a general news reporter partially covering some local sport just north of the border in Langholm.

Max has just started his journey with the NCG working as the assistant equipment editor. He looks forwarded to reviewing the latest golf equipment, taking up an interest in reviews when buying his first golf club, a Cleveland RTX wedge.

With his bag not going under too many changes throughout the last few years, Max carries an M3 driver, Titleist GT3 Fairway Wood, M2 hybrid, a set of M2 irons, Callaway Jaws wedges and a TaylorMade Spider putter. And yes, Max is a bit of a self-proclaimed TaylorMade fan boy.
