Wilson Dynapwr Carbon driver review: NCG Summary

NCG SUMMARY

I really like the improvements Wilson have made in terms of styling this year. This is more compact and premium and will definitely suit that player and tour market more.

Data wise this performed exceptionally well across the board and the new levels of adjustability mean you can really dial this in to suit your game.

PROS

  • Smaller, more refined shaping
  • Fast ball speeds across the face
  • Forgiving on off-centre strikes

CONS

  • Spin slightly high

First Impressions

Wilson have really stepped up the aesthetics this year. I particularly like the slightly smaller shape and the two-toned crown. The front black alignment section around the face dials you in and gives this more of a player’s look.

NCG Review

Wilson are really trying to target the better player market with this club. As such, this is designed to be more workable and to have a neutral-to-fade-bias ball flight. In my testing, I found the start line pretty consistent and fairly neutral. Interestingly all my longest shots were slight fades. If you don’t like to see the golf ball go left this is a great option.

I first hit this on a freezing cold range at Formby Hall, and despite the temperature and strong crosswind, this club performed really well. I then took this to Portugal for some more thorough testing and was still impressed with the results.

A big positive for me was how stable the ball flight was at all times in both the still and windy weather I felt I could keep could control of the ball flight.

Across the board, the data is pretty optimal here. 235-yard carry is just where I like to see my driver and the ball speed of nearly 140 mph from 93 mph of club head speed is very efficient.

My longest shot got up 242.6 yards which is pretty much up there with some of the longest shots I have hit this year when testing drivers.

The majority of the shots stayed under 100ft of height which I was very pleased with as I can often get the ball going too high in the air which can make the ball hard to control when you are playing in any significant wind.

The only thing that was slightly higher than I would of liked was the spin. I did only hit this with the stock shaft though so I am fairly certain I could get this lower with something more on spec.

Overall, this driver is a really strong contender for Wilson this year, especially for the price point. Get ready to see a lot more of these in play on tour and at the club level.

Testing Protocol

To test this product we travelled to West Cliffs a leading European golf course just North of Lisbon. The idea was to get some warmer weather and escape our frozen British courses. It of course rained, a lot, was very windy. Each of our test team were allocated a category of golf clubs, fairways, or a specific type of driver or iron.

We gathered data on a Trackman 4 or FlightScope. We used Titleist Pro V1 for all tests. The samples we have are either fully fitted for our testers or ordered in our assumed specs. We are then able to optimise performance by swapping shafts and playing with the adjustability. As well as that dry testing all of the product was tested on course in a comparative environment with other product from the same category. We recognise that no testing process is perfect and just aim to be fair in our treatment, transparent in our process and candid in our feedback.
