Choosing a golf ball based on price or whatever’s on offer is common, but is it costing you shots? We asked the experts and put a TaylorMade golf ball fitting to the test to get a better understanding

How many of you have had a ball fitting? What if you realised it could have a really big impact on your game?

“There’s no doubt I think everyday golfers should get fit for a golf ball. You shouldn’t really just focus on the club. The ball is actually quite key,” said Paul Miller, who was part of an NCG team that went through a ball fitting with TaylorMade.

Golf club fittings are becoming ever more popular with club golfers. It’s not uncommon anymore to see players of a range of abilities book a custom fitting in search of extra distance or consistency.

So why are golf ball fittings still so rare? It’s the one piece of equipment every golfers uses for every shot, but still remains overlooked by so many.

This is despite manufacturers insisting they can have a significant impact, both positively and negatively, on performance.

The Your Golf by NCG team, of Miller, Tom Bullough, and Nicola Slater, undertook a TaylorMade golf ball fitting, with specialist golf ball and shaft fitter Dan Morris, to see how much a golfer can actually gain.

The experience challenged some long-held assumptions about choosing a golf ball and highlighted why selecting the right model is about much more than handicap or price.

Morris explained the process starts by understanding how golfers perform around the greens before working through the rest of the bag.

How can you sum up the golf ball fitting process?

“If I was to summarise the golf ball fitting process, I think it’s first to understand what the golfer is struggling with or what they’re seeing on the golf course themselves,” Morris said.

“I think, for me, I was trying to work backwards in that process. So get the feedback of what are they like around the greens.

“Do they like a certain feel with the golf ball? Do they like to react to the golf ball with certain shots? Then [we] work it back and we’ll move into the irons and then we’ll move through the bag into a hybrid and then ultimately into the driver.”

Like many golfers, Bullough has always placed greater importance on club fittings, without giving much credence to what golf ball he plays. But admitted the ball fitting experience has changed his view.

“I think I prioritise a club fitting because there was a bigger, dramatic difference for me,” he said. “But I think it’s something you should definitely consider doing on a semi-regular basis.

“As your swing paths change, as your clubs change, as you as a golfer becomes different, you should have the ball that moulds how you play.”

Miller agreed, and explained: “I’ve never had a golf ball fitting before. I think it’s something actually I never even thought about, the focus is often just on driver or other clubs.

“Golfers buy whatever golf balls are on offer. It’s understandable, but I do think that if you want to get consistency in your game, find out your golf ball, whatever it is. It’s not related to handicap. It’s your fitting with your swing.”

Max Mcvittie

A bit of a late bloomer to the game of golf, Max fell in love with the sport when he attended Saturday coaching sessions down at his local golf club after being inspired by friends and family members.

Max has remained a member of Eden Golf Club in Carlisle for a number of years now as he looks to get his handicap down into single figures. Most of his golfing career has been spent battling a permanent slice off the tee, which has led to some ugly rounds.

Having studied at the University of Sunderland, Max is starting out his dream career in sports journalism. During his time at university, he picked up valuable work experience at Reach PLC, BBC Radio Cumbria and GiveMeSport, whilst also getting work published in the Teesside Live. He also spent time working at a local weekly newspaper, Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser, as a general news reporter partially covering some local sport just north of the border in Langholm.

Max has just started his journey with the NCG working as the assistant equipment editor. He looks forwarded to reviewing the latest golf equipment, taking up an interest in reviews when buying his first golf club, a Cleveland RTX wedge.

With his bag not going under too many changes throughout the last few years, Max carries an M3 driver, Titleist GT3 Fairway Wood, M2 hybrid, a set of M2 irons, Callaway Jaws wedges and a TaylorMade Spider putter. And yes, Max is a bit of a self-proclaimed TaylorMade fan boy.
