Jon Rahm has been the man of the moment these past few months – even if his stagnant world rankings position suggests otherwise – and a ludicrous stat revealing what handicap the Spaniard would currently have has now testified the insanity of his form.
The World No 5 has been lighting it up as of late, winning three times in his last five starts and boasting 10 top 10 finishes in his last 15 events – a timeframe which also included no missed cuts.
So after shooting 63 on day four at the Sentry Tournament of Champions to overcome a seven-shot deficit from Collin Morikawa – a feat which caused a ton of hoo-ha after Rahm failed to move up in the OWGR once again – Twitter user @MichaelVerity decided to determine his handicap using the current WHS handicapping system. And the results are staggering…
According to Vertity’s calculations, the 28-year-old would be playing off a mind-blowing +13 if he were to still be an amateur.
To put this into perspective, if it wasn’t already bonkers enough, statistician Luke Stanger produced a similar calculation to determine what Tiger Woods’ handicap would have been during one of his peak periods of dominance in 2008.
Here Stagner has Woods’ handicap index at +9.4, meaning the then US Open champion would be getting a nice chunk of shots off 2023 Rahmbo!
Incredible. No wonder the Spaniard feels he’s currently the best player in the world.
