Who will be victorious as the DP World Tour heads to South Africa? Oddschecker’s Tom Jacobs has three players he expects to content at the Nedbank Golf Challenge

After a three year absence due to COVID, the Nedbank Golf Challenge returns this week to stage the penultimate event of the 2022 DP World Tour season. Tommy Fleetwood will be defending his title at Gary Player Country Club as players vie for a final spot in the DP World Tour Tour Championship. Keep scrolling for my betting tips on the 2022 Nedbank Golf Challenge, but first…

2022 Nedbank Golf Challenge details

Venue: The Gary Player Country Club, Sun City, South Africa

Dates: Nov 10–13, 2022

Course stats: Par 72, 7,827 yards

Course summary: The fairways at Gary Player Country Club aren’t the widest, and with tough rough, accuracy off the tee will be crucial. The greens are fairly small and there are plenty of bunkers so this could well be settled by whoever has the sharpest short game.

Purse: $6 million

Defending champion: Tommy Fleetwood (2019) (-12)

2022 Nedbank Golf Challenge betting tips

The Banker: Thomas Detry @ 14/1 with Bet365

Thomas Detry is going to win at some point soon, he just is. The challenge is going to be figuring out whether he does it in Europe, or on the PGA Tour. His start to this PGA Tour season has proven what we suspected, he is capable of playing at that level, but what we still know, is he is yet to win on the top two tours.

In two starts at the Nedbank, Detry finished 7th and 3rd and on both occasions, he had a chance to win. In 2018, Detry was in 3rd place, and three shots back going into Sunday, despite opening with a 75. He couldn’t put pressure on Sergio Garcia that year, and it was a similar story in 2019, when finishing 3rd.

That time, he had posted three-straight under-par rounds to open on this tough layout, and went into the last day, one shot back of Zander Lombard. A final-round 74 saw him fall away, ending up four shots short of the Tommy Fleetwood, Marcus Kinhult playoff.

A better player since the two starts here, Sun City looks the perfect place for Detry to make a breakthrough, even if statistically he doesn’t appear to be living up to his form.

The Belgian is 5 for 5 for made cuts on the PGA Tour this season, and has 2nd, 9th, 12th, and 15th place finishes in those starts. He’s a short price, but it feels inevitable a first win could come at this price, after years of people backing him at bigger.

The Each-Way Play: Gavin Green @ 45/1 with Bet365

Gavin Green has finished 5th in Doha and has twice been T12 at Crans, two events I think tie into this one nicely. On top of those nice correlating efforts, the Malaysian has made his last ten-straight cuts, and in that time has three runner-up finishes, and an 11th to his name, so he is clearly a man in form.

Green has two starts here, and while he couldn’t finish better than 57th or 21st on those occasions, this is a weaker field, and he’s in great form, so I think he can post a career-best, and by some way,

Green’s driver in isolation could be better, but his approaches have been him rank, 6th, 8th, and 1st in the field in recent starts, and he’s also ranked 3rd, 7th and 3rd in SG Tee to Green in those same three events.

Given his quality current form, his correlative course form, and the fact he’s an overdue a DP World Tour win, I think Green is worth a bet here at 45-1.

The Long Shot: Kalle Samooja @ 200/1 with Bet365

The two courses I have flagged as correlative courses are Doha and Crans sur Sierre, and that is where Kalle Samooja has done his best work, outside of his win.

3rd and 5th at the Qatar Masters is a great sign, as is his 2nd place finish at Crans sur Sierre, and he’s played here in the past as well. In his first and only start here, he finished in 10th place, and just recently he shot a second-round 64 at the Portugal Masters, where he just couldn’t put four rounds together.

Now a winner this year, he returns to a course he has impressed at, and correlates nicely with other favourites of his, so I think at 200-1 in a short field, he is worth chancing.
