As the FedEx Cup Playoffs get underway, tipster Barry Plummer has three players in mind to succeed at TPC Southwind

WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational leaderboard 2019

After a PGA Tour season full of talking points, we are steadily climbing towards the big one at East Lake. First however, we have the small matter of the FedEx St Jude Championship – formerly the Northern Trust – to negotiate with its new status as a FedEx Cup Playoffs event. The field boasts the 122 best players from the 2021-2022 season, and with that there is plenty of value to be found. After analysing the field, I am confident I have three guys you will want to side with. But before I get to my free golf betting tips…

FedEx St Jude Championship details

Venue: TPC Southwind, Memphis, USA

Date: August 11-14, 2022

Course stats: Par 70; 7,238 yards

Course summary: A tough test that is truly fitting of a Playoffs event awaits the players in Memphis. Tree-lined fairways, of which nine are doglegs, will test the players’ accuracy off the tee. Water comes into play on at least half of the holes, and numerous bunkers offer protection to the smaller than average Bermuda greens.

Purse: $15,000,000

Defending champion: Abraham Ancer (-16)

FedEx St Jude Championship golf betting tips

Bazza’s Banker: Patrick Cantlay – 2.5pt e/w @ 18/1 with Bet365

golf betting tips

The current FedEx Cup champion appears to have hit form just in time for the Playoffs after a winless 2022 to date. That is not to say that he has had a bad year by any stretch of the imagination, with three runner-up finishes including last time out. When you add that to a third-place finish and five further top 10s, he really is someone who we can bank on to be consistent.

His positive experience in the last couple of FedEx Cup Playoffs will hopefully give him an edge over the other market leaders, while his performance stats are even more encouraging. Cantlay ranks in the top 23 for all Strokes Gained measures, and ranks 2nd for SG: Total in the last 12 months. That first win may well come this week, and if not, he will definitely be one to watch for the remainder of the Playoffs.

The Each-Way Play: Collin Morikawa – 1.5pt e/w @ 33/1 with Bet365

Morikawa has clearly struggled with his game of late, but write him off at your peril! Morikawa is a great price this week, perhaps due to that disappointing run of recent form, so I cannot resist playing him as a solid each-way pick.

Morikawa was 5th at the US Open and 5th at the Masters this year, at tracks where ball striking is at a premium. In the last six months, Morikawa ranks 5th for SG: Approach, and after winning six titles in his previous three seasons, he will surely be in the mix to get a first win of the year in one of the biggest events on the calendar.

The Long Shot: Tyrrell Hatton – 1pt e/w @ 55/1 with Bet365

Hatton has had a mini-resurgence of late, finishing in the top 25 in each of his last three events including when T11 at the 150th Open. The Englishman has massively improved his performance stats in those 12 rounds of golf, ranking 12th for SG: Approach and 12th for SG: Tee-to-Green. Solid short game figures also make this a very appealing selection, especially as he finished a career best 17th at this track last year. At a reasonable price, and as a big Tyrrell fan, I like his chances.
