TaylorMade MG4 Wedge Review: First Impressions

Confidence inspiring

The TaylorMade Milled Grind 4, MG4, wedge doesn’t just catch your eye, it inspires confidence before you hit a golf ball. Available in sleek chrome and a stealthy black finish, it presents a refined look in the bag and behind the ball.

I think TaylorMade has done a great job in stripping away visual clutter. The back of the club is simple and modern, with sculpted ridges on the sole and a two-tone face that helps with better alignment.

Perhaps most distinctive is the contrast between the polished toe and heel and the darker, rougher raw face. This is a very functional design.

NCG Verdict

Rust is not a bad thing

The MG4 features a raw face, which is a favourite among tour pros, including Rory McIlroy, because of its enhanced feel and spin potential. Unlike traditional chrome-plated clubfaces that resist corrosion, this one is unplated, allowing it to rust over time. While that might sound off-putting to some, the payoff is a softer feel and higher spin, two things every golfer wants in their scoring clubs.

New Spin Tread technology

TaylorMade’s new Spin Tread technology is the standout tech story here. The laser-etched tread pattern between the grooves helps disperse moisture, grass, and debris, maintaining strong contact between the ball and face. During my testing, I didn’t find it uncommon to see spin rates of 8000–9000 RPM on 50-yard pitches, especially when paired with a premium tour ball.

Spin and check

As a result, I was able to execute shots that check up reliably and stopped instantly. Whether it was shots from fairway lies, bunkers, or the thick stuff around the greens they all performed brilliantly.

Fantastic versatility

One of the strongest aspects of the MG4 is how well it adapts to different shots. Whether it’s a low, checking chip, a high-flighted flop, or a blast from the sand, the wedge delivers consistent performance. The grind and bounce options, of which there are six in total, allow for ideal customization, catering to steep or shallow swings, firm or soft turf, and all styles in between.

I like how the low offset and relatively straight leading edge give a square, confidence-inspiring look at address. That visual feedback is subtle but essential for golfers who rely on precision in their short game.

Final Verdict

Excellent all round performance

Overall, I’m under the impression that TaylorMade’s Milled Grind 4 wedge isn’t just a continuation of a successful line, it feels more like the culmination of years of incremental improvements. With premium materials, thoughtful design, and cutting-edge groove tech, I found this wedge excels across the board. It also comes stock with a solid shaft and grip which is something I believe is rarely seen in the wedge market, where upgrades are often needed right out of the gate.

Taking your game to the next level

For players looking to take their wedge game to the next level, the MG4 is a top-tier option. It’s no surprise it’s become a staple in many tour bags, if its good enough for some of the best players in the world then it is good enough for us.
