Callaway Opus Brushed Chrome Wedge Review: First Impressions

Impressive looks

I know they have been available for a little bit now, but this was my first time seeing the Callaway Opus Brushed Chrome wedges never mind trying them out. I have to say I was impressed with its sleek, minimalist design. Unlike many wedges that clutter the back of the club with busy patterns or logos, the Opus opts for a classic brushed chrome finish that just looks cleaner.

I found its compact shape, paired with a tight leading edge, makes alignment feel natural and confidence-inspiring. For golfers who appreciate a square, grounded look at address, this wedge is a perfect fit.

Spin Jen Face technology

In terms of the tech involved, the standout feature of the Callaway Opus wedge is its Spin Jen Face Technology. This includes super sharp grooves and a unique offset groove pattern that runs diagonally across the face. This shallower milling increases friction at impact, which is further enhanced by Callaway’s aggressive face blast and ultimately helps increase spin even in wet conditions. These technological advancements make the Opus a spin machine, particularly impressive out of the rough and in challenging weather.

Another hallmark of this wedge is its tour-validated shape, which includes a slightly higher toe peak, sharper leading-edge radius, and a smoother hosel transition. Callaway have worked with tour professionals, to refine the shape for optimal performance. Whether it’s a flop shot, a bump-and-run, or a delicate pitch, I found the Opus delivers consistent spin and control as result.

Excels from the sand

Whilst testing the Opus Brushed Chrome wedge on the course one key quality stood out to me. It was from the sand. The club seemed to slide through the bunker, whilst generating optimal spin to be able to control the rollout to the hole.

It also excelled on pitch shots and flop shots. While the standard Opus performed well, the Platinum edition with tungsten weighting stood out for its enhanced stability and feel, particularly on longer chips. Regardless of the situation I was chipping out of, the Opus delivered high spin rates and remarkable shot-stopping power.

Final Verdict

Up there with Vokey and Cleveland

Overall, I think the Callaway Opus Brushed Chrome wedge is a great addition to Callaway’s wedge line-up. Its blend of cutting-edge face technology, tour-tested shaping, and extensive customization options make it a standout choice for golfers seeking precision and versatility.

While brands like Vokey and Cleveland dominate the conversation in wedges, the Opus is right up there with the best of them. In my opinion, it deserves recognition as one of the premier short-game tools available today.
