Takomo have been making waves in the golf industry with many influencers now using their clubs. The brand is building a strong reputation for delivering premium-looking clubs at a fraction of the price of the big-name brands. With the Skyforger SF002 wedges, the Finnish brand is looking to bring that same value proposition into the short-game arena. They maybe half the price of TaylorMade and Titleist wedges, but do they offer the same performance levels? Find out in our review…

Takomo Skyforger SF002 Wedge Review: NCG Summary

NCG SUMMARY

The Takomo Skyforger SF002 wedge is an impressive addition to the growing direct-to-consumer market. It offers clean looks, premium components, and excellent performance at a price point that undercuts the biggest names in the game. At £99, this is nearly half the cost of a leading tour wedge, yet it still delivers plenty of spin, strong performance from bunkers and rough, and a satisfying feel. The only drawback is that grind and bounce options are limited, which may put off better players seeking precise customisation.

PROS

  • Clean, modern design
  • Excellent levels of spin, especially from rough and bunkers
  • Head-heavy feel offers good control for a range of golfers

CONS

  • Not as soft-feeling as forged wedges like the TaylorMade MG5

First Impressions

I loved the look of the Takomo SF002 wedge as soon as I took it out of the box. The design is clean and simple, with a modern edge which I think feels premium despite its low price. The full-face grooves immediately stand out. While traditionalists may find them unconventional, they serve a clear purpose by providing more spin when the face is opened and shots are struck nearer the toe. This is a feature that many golfers will appreciate once they get used to the look.

NCG Review

On the course, I found the Takomo SF002 wedge produced plenty of spin, giving golfers the confidence to attack pins and control their ball around the greens. The head-heavy feel may take some adjustment, but I found it helped to generate a consistent strike. This will be useful for plenty of club golfers. Out of bunkers and rough, the wedge performed particularly well, inspiring confidence in tricky situations.

Takomo Skyforger SF002 Wedge

While the feel is not quite as soft as premium forged wedges such as the TaylorMade MG5, it is still responsive enough to provide good feedback. For a cast design, I was impressed with the sensation at impact. The wedge delivers all the performance most golfers will need at a fraction of the cost of leading brands.

As with Takomo’s irons, the wedge features progressive centre of gravity placement, which shifts depending on loft to help control flight and spin. The components are excellent, with KBS shafts and Lamkin Crossline grips included as standard. This is particularly impressive given the price point and demonstrates Takomo’s commitment to offering value without compromising on quality.

NCG Verdict

In summary, I think the Takomo SF002 wedge is a fantastic option for golfers looking to refresh their short game setup without spending a fortune. It looks stylish, spins impressively, and performs well from a wide variety of lies. Better players may wish for more grind and bounce options, but most golfers will find that the SF002 provides everything they need. This is a wedge that combines performance and value better than almost any alternative on the market.

About the author

Callaway Epic Max driver review
Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.

Titleist TSR2 Fairway wood

TaylorMade P7MB 3-P

Titleist SM10 wedges
