The P770s are compact players’ iron that offer some serious speed and distance. These are perfect for the better player who may not be the longest and want something that is forgiving when they don’t quite catch it perfectly.

First Impressions

How good do these look?! I really love the clean, crisp lines on the back of the club head and think everyone will agree these would look great in anybody’s golf bag.

You can see how the toe shaping is more compact and rounded compared to the previous generation, which I think looks great behind the golf ball.

I also like how TaylorMade have straightened out the lines on the back of the club head to give a cleaner more blade-like appearance to this part of the club head. This has to be one of the best looking players irons on the market.

NCG Review

When hitting these, I was impressed with the sound and feel straight away. On a centre strike, these really give you a forged iron-like feel despite the hollow body construction.

I really like the compact players shaping of these over the ball. I think TaylorMade have done a great job of blending the smaller shaping while still providing something that gives you confidence and doesn’t look too difficult to hit. Even the 3-iron is a perfectly manageable size behind the golf ball.

First up, let’s talk distance. Irons are interesting as they have to fit a certain distance gap. Too short and you’ll have a massive gap at the top of your bag, too long, and you’ll need to carry an excessive amount of wedges.

Generally, I will expect to get 154 yards from my 7-iron. The P770s fit the gap excellently, carrying 152.6 yards on average with the 7-iron. Perfect.

In terms of gapping, the clubs worked nicely together. The 9-iron was carrying 123 yards and the 5-iron 177.6 yards on average. Perhaps the 9-iron was slightly on the short side but remember these are fairly off-the-rack specs so this might change with a full custom fitting.

With the long irons, my bad shot is a bit bottom-groovy, and I was impressed with how my distance and ball speed stayed up even on these slight misstrikes. I have the thru slot speed pocket technology to thank for this which allows the bottom of the face to flex more.

TaylorMade also sent me a 3-iron to test, which is not a club I would usually game, but I gave it a go nonetheless. I was pleasantly surprised. I was carrying this on average just over 200 yards and found it very easy to launch for this type of long iron.

I think really I don’t have the speed or attack angle to put it in play but I was impressed with the relative playability.

These offer enough help in terms of extra distance for players who are abit shorter without being so hot that it ends up affecting your distance control. This is seen in how consistent my front to back dispersion was throughout testing.

Although the spin was lower in the long irons than Jack saw with the P7MC and P7MB, the launch angle and height meant I still had plenty of stopping power to get these to stop on the greens.

Dispersion is always going to be player dependent, but I was very happy with the consistency across the bag here and felt these still gave me a level of control so I could shape the ball if I wanted to.

I was really impressed by just how easy the long irons were to launch, even if you catch the ball slightly low of centre, the flexible speed pocket design means it is still easy to get the ball in the air and maintain a nice high ball flight.

These are really impressive all-round players’ irons that offer a great blend of forgiveness and distance. They are definitely a contender to make it into my bag for the 2023 season!
