I was really excited to get my hands on these new TaylorMade P790 irons for 2025 and test them out. They are the market leader for player’s distance irons and are the brand that established the category. These irons are designed to offer added distance whilst remaining forgiving.

NCG SUMMARY
TaylorMade are the inventors of the player’s distance iron and they have not disappointed with the latest iteration of their P790 irons. Their clean looks are accompanied by an extremely playable iron that offer plenty of distance.
They also provide plenty of loft across the set. Even on off-centred strikes the performance remains really strong. TaylorMade have produced some adequately forgiving irons that have a much bigger sweet spot than that of the previous generation of irons.
Cosmetically, TaylorMade has moved the P790 logo to the middle of the head. After feedback from tour players, the brand has also made the topline thinner than previous models as this is meant to act as an aspirational set of irons, for a scratch golfer or for a 20 handicapper.
I really like the way it is styled and TaylorMade haven’t tinkered with the appearance loads which is a positive. The brushed steel look has remained but I do think it has improved at address with a slighter thinner profile looking down.
In the longer irons especially it is evident that this is the biggest head from the irons out of the P7 series. That being said I’m not offended by these clubs at all and I am actually a fan of them.
TaylorMade 2025 P790 irons review: NCG Verdict
TaylorMade had a tough assignment undertaking the redevelopment of these irons considering how well received and performing the previous four generations of these irons were.
This year’s irons are stronger than the previous P790s. I was concerned that, because of the stronger lofts, that they were going come too low off the face but that wasn’t my experience. I found that they actually launched particularly high and flew a long way.
Even on slightly off-centred strikes the ball was still launching well and carrying a strong distance. I was around 10-15 yards longer with these irons than I am with my own set which is a great bonus.

Although where I struck the club face varied throughout, the different strikes I had with the nine iron still produced a very tight dispersion. I was averaging around a 144 yard carry, which I was perfectly happy with in terms of my own game.
Sometimes as golfers we can be guilty of focusing too much on gaining that extra bit of distance. Often we forget how irons should be our precision tools out on the golf course. Precision is certainly what you get from the TaylorMade 2025 P790s as they provide tight groupings from a number of strikes.
Something else I love about these irons is how soft they feel off the face on each strike due to the new face material TaylorMade has introduced. Made from a 4340M material these irons are able to be a touch lighter and stronger than what the previous face metal material promoted.
Additionally, because of how thin and fast the fast material is, TaylorMade say that the sweet spot is 24% bigger than that of the previous generation of P790s. This is a massive increase and means more of the shots are going to perform better and more consistently. The front to back dispersion is also going to be tighter to help improve your game.
A concern I tend to have with hollow body construction irons is the ball coming off the face a touch flat, hot and with no spin. I have played two rounds of golf with these and had no issue with stopping the ball on the greens.
The only issue I did experience was having to adapt to how far they carry, clubbing down on nearly all my shots.
A cool feature in the P790s is that the inside of each iron looks different. The iron head is engineered differently for a variety of launch characteristics, there is a range of tungsten sized weights in each head which I think is important.

These technological adjustments have enable the irons to be more playable as the thinner faces has pushed the centre of gravity back in the face, promoting the high launch. A lot of club golfers struggle at times to play their four and five irons, possibly resorting to substituting them for woods or hybrids. The P790s allow for more irons to be put in the bag.
Practically, I found the gapping throughout the set was extremely impressive. I had around a 20 yard difference between the 9-iron, 7-iron and 5-irons which was absolutely perfect.
Overall, the new TaylorMade P790 irons are really high performing. If you are in the market for some player’s distance irons then it is going to be hard to look past these irons. There are some strong competitors this year but, for me, TaylorMade’s hold on the player’s distance category remains as strong as ever.
