The West Sussex Golf Club is one of the most natural and aesthetically pleasing heathland courses in all of England.
Pulborough, as it the venue is affectionately known thanks to its location, was opened in the early 1930s, and not much has changed with the layout ever since.
Bernard Darwin described West Sussex as a “little sandy jewel set in the Sussex clay”, and it could not have been a more apt description!
History
1930 saw the opening of the West Sussex Golf Club. This came after Commander George Hilluyard had recognized the potential of an area of marshland overlooking the beautiful landscape.
This vision became a reality when the course was designed and constructed by the skilled hands of Campbell and Hutchinson. Over the years, West Sussex has remained true to its original design, changing very little.
Nature has had a say though, as trees that were planted around the course, shortly after its opening, have grown and blossomed. This has transformed the landscape from an open setting, into a tree-lined layout.
What makes West Sussex Golf Club special?
West Sussex is a course that despite being originally based on marshy turf, the greens play almost like those on the Australian sandbelt.
It is a delightful place to play golf and the apotheosis of a traditional, heathland course that you would expect to find in this part of the country.

Where does it rank?
66th in GB&I, 26th in England, 2nd in Sussex, 36th in England Value
