West Cornwall: An old-school and quirky links

Why we’d rather be playing the oldest links course in Cornwall…

The oldest course in the county, West Cornwall is a challenging links course that has offered fabulous views for well over a century!

It was 1889 when the West Cornwall Golf Club first came to be, and although there has been changes and extensions, one thing that has stayed constant are the beautiful views.

From the course, you can look out over St Ives Bay and the Hayle Estuary, and on a bright and sunny day, there are not many better views from any golf course in the country…

History

The West Cornwall Golf Club is the oldest venue in the southwesternmost county of England, with the club dating back all the way to 1889.

Reverend Tyacke was the man to design the original 9-hole layout at the time, and it would not be until the early 1920s that the course would be extended to 18 holes.

The great Jim Barnes, a winner of the PGA Championship, US Open and the Open Championship throughout his astonishing career, called West Cornwall home.

What makes West Cornwall Golf Club special?

West Cornwall has pretty much everything you would expect from a links venue – coastal views, pristine turf and a railway line running through the course.

Throw in the fact that you’ve got a glorious church next to the property as well, and you know that you are in a stunning seaside location!

Where does it rank?

142nd in England, 6th in Cornwall

Where is West Cornwall Golf Club?

As the name suggests, West Cornwall Golf Club is located in the west of the English county of Cornwall. In fact, there is only one golfing venue that sits further west in England. The course is on the northern coastline of Cornwall, looking out over Porthkidney Beach and St Ives Bay. Lelant and Hayle are the closest towns, located on either side of the estuary. Penzance is ten miles to the south, with Newquay 30 miles away, and Plymouth over 70 to the east. Newquay Airport is 40 miles away, while Bristol Airport – the largest airport in the southwest of England – is 170 miles away from the venue.
