Heading to The Open? Here are some things to do in St Andrews

R&A clubhouse

You can’t go in, of course, but if you’ve never been to St Andrews before you’ll want to savour a few moments in the shadows of golf’s most famous building.

Swilcan Bridge

Whether you’ll be able to get a photo of yourself standing on the bridge remains to be seen, but you’ll certainly get close enough to appreciate it.

Old Tom Morris’s Shop

The oldest golf shop in the world and now known as The Open Store, this is where Tom Morris Sr plied his trade upon returning from Prestwick.

Cathedral

The spectucular 12th-century ruins will take your breath away. Be sure to visit Old Tom Morris’s grave while you’re there.

Castle

More ancient ruins? Sign me up. If you’re even remotely interested in history, this is a must-visit.

World Golf Museum

Explore golf from its origins to the global game it is today. Great fun for all the family – but book soon!

Aquarium

If you need an hour away from the golf, immerse yourself with black tip reef sharks, seals, penguins, more than 100 fish species, and, for some reason, meerkats.

Jigger Inn

A former station master’s lodge – St Andrews used to have a railway line, don’t you know – today you will find memorabilia, open fires, and a cracking pint.

Dunvegan Hotel

If you’re looking for something a bit more lively, this is a must-stop for a beer and a chat with a stranger.

West Sands Beach

Looking to get out of it all for a bit, maybe blow away some cobwebs, or a hangover? This glorious stretch of sand will do just the trick.
