Reason for Sunningdale (New) Golf Club review

A friendly game with some mates.

Where is Sunningdale?

Sunningdale is located 30 miles to the south west of London, on Chobham Common in Berkshire, just South of Windsor, and a stones throw from Virginia Water.

The New was designed in 1923 by Harry Colt and is the longer and more demanding of the two courses.

What to expect

One of the best golfing experiences in the UK, on driving through the gates you really feel like you are somewhere special. This a fair and rewarding golf course, with a tough start and superb par 3s.  The off course facilities are also second to none.

Favourite hole

The par-4 4th. Two great shots are required to reach this long hole with raised green. The tee shot if you hit driver needs to be faded, laying back leaves a long iron or fairway wood into the well-guarded green with bunkers and steep run offs, so take it on off the tee!

My best bit

Smashing driver from the elevated back tee on the par-5 6th.

The view is breathtaking, and it is very rewarding hitting into the abyss to what seems like a small piece of tight green turf surrounded all sides by carpet of brilliant purple heather, and making the fairway.

From there I hit a best of the day 4-iron into the bank of the extremely large and steep Mackenzie style green.

What to look for

The half way hut, make sure to stop and have a sausage sandwich. No, seriously…

When I go back…

I just hope it is just as good, we had perfect weather and the course was in as good as condition as any inland course I have ever played in October, still running fast and true.
