The James Braid classic provides golfers with some stunning views and is a real hidden gem

Goswick Links

Reason for a Goswick Golf Club review

The commercial team (TL) finally managed to organise a weekend golf trip to East Lothian, so we decided to stop off south of the border before heading into Scotland.

Where is it?

6 miles south of Berwick-upon-Tweed, just an hour from Newcastle and Edinburgh.

Goswick Links

What to expect?

Once you have driven along a twisting country lane you reach Goswick Links, where a fantastic links course is unveiled. The James Braid classic lies in-between the East-Coast mainline and the North Sea, which provides golfers with some stunning views and is a real hidden gem. Although fairly generous from the tee, you have to be really careful when approaching the green as most are heavily protected by deep bunkers and undulating slopes.

My best bit?

I really enjoyed hitting approach shots into the greens. There were lots of holes that set up challenging and picturesque approach shots into the well surrounded greens and although these definitely tested my ability there were a couple of solid efforts that do spring to mind.

On the Par 5, 11th…

I struck a 6-iron into a strong crosswind right over the pin. For the remainder of the 180-yard walk to the green we all thought I had my first ever Albatross, only to find my ball 6 foot short on the hole, which I went on to sink for my Eagle 3.

On the Par 4, 14th…

I was in the fairway bunker with 150 yards into the secluded green. I hit a solid 8-iron over the mound and in the right direction for the green. To my delight, my ball was 12-feet away from the flag, and I even managed to roll in the birdie-putt to halve the crucial hole in our “friendly” match.

When I go back…

I will make sure to check the weather forecast and try to pick another glorious day so that I can enjoy Goswick Links and the stunning surroundings again as Goswick truly is a hidden gem.
