National Club Golfer's Georgina Simpson reveals all about a course close to her heart

Reason for a Cleckheaton & District Golf Club review

I am very privileged to have been made an honourary member of Cleackheaton & District Golf Club in 1993 at 18 years old when I represented England Women in the Home Internationals.

I don’t get to play there as much now as I am working full time, although I still love playing 9 holes with my partner Simon when I can in the late summer evenings.

I don’t often play socially having been a professional, so it was lovely and a real change to have a laugh and enjoy some social golf.

Where is Cleckheaton & District?

Cleckheaton is situated in West Yorkshire, just off the notorious Junction 26 of the M62. Despite the traffic being so close, once on the golf course you only see the motorway on the 1st, 9th, 10th and 18th holes.

What to expect

At its best in the summer months, a good mixture of interesting holes. An enjoyable parkland golf course and a good test when the greens are firm and fast.

Favourite hole

The 16th hole because you have to carry your ball over a ravine, you can choose how brave you intend to be judged by how far you can carry the ball.

My line off the tee has changed over the years from playing safe when I was a beginner/junior to driving the green as a professional. The wind plays a big part on this hole too but if you can get close to the green you have a chance at a birdie, a real risk/reward hole.

My best bit

Beating Simon. I’m still very competitive!

What to look out for

The 2nd hole always plays a club further than you expect it to. It is uphill, but by what percentage of slope, I’m not sure, however remember to take one more and you’ll be fine.

When I go back

I favour the back 9 over the front and often play the back 9 on an evening in the summer.
