NCG Top 100s: Wales – ‘My favourite region’

The Wales list has been announced, but which courses should possibly be higher?

North Wales, South Wales, the west coast? There is plenty of choice but when it comes to their favourite region, what have our panellists decided on?

There is plenty of choice when it comes to Welsh golf, with links courses around the coast, and stunning moorland tracks further infield.

When it comes to booking a golf holiday, you might need to make the choice as to which part of Wales you want to visit. Each region provides a mixture of seaside links courses, along with moorland courses which are further inland.

What do our panellists think? Where would they go if they had to choose a specific region in Wales?

Favourite region in Wales? What do our panellists think?

David Walker: South West Wales – the area from Porthcawl to Tenby offers outstanding courses and amazing scenery.

Chris Myatt: A near dead heat with the north-west coast marginally edging favour. North Wales, Conwy and Bull Bay make a great weekend trip.

Greg Webber: Difficult, as there are so many: Powys has tranquil beauty, Cardigan Bay has rugged beauty, Glamorganshire has beautiful spots and the highest concentration of courses.

Mike Robertson: The Conwy area has been the base for an annual golf trip of mine for a while now.

Sean Arble: South Wales extending to the west coast. Great variety of moorland and links for reasonable green fees.

Jim Banting: Llandudno – plenty of fun and rewarding courses.

Ed Battye: South Wales – a wide variety of quality and varied links courses.

Neil Gray: South Wales. Having played a lot of rugby in my youth, it’s great to see some of the famous rugby towns that are also in such close proximity to great golf courses.

Dan Murphy: West coast – the combination of that cost-hugging train line and golf that is sandwiched between the Irish Sea and Snowdonia gets me every time.

Peter Rudd: North Wales blends golf courses so well with the mountains. It is dominated by links courses and most have Snowdonia as a background.

Do you agree with our panellists? Have you been to Wales to play golf before? If so, what is your favourite region for golf in Wales? Let us know your thoughts with a post on X, formerly Twitter!

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
