Imagine driving just a few miles from the centre of one of the biggest cities in England and reaching a stunning golf course with views of the Peak District. Imagine no more…
Those unfamiliar with the area are invariably surprised by how quickly the two merge into each other – industrial city adjacent to national park. In a sense, Hallamshire Golf Club marks the dividing point between the city of Sheffield and moors of the Peak District. Our competitors got to enjoy this glorious layout in the August sunshine…
Thanks to its four sets of tees, Hallamshire almost plays as three different courses. The Yellows are just shy of 6,000 yards and play as a Par 69, with the Whites around the 6,350 and the Blacks at 6,550. However, both the Whites and Black play as a Par 71, with the 14th and 18th becoming par 5s.
The length of the course off the Reds – almost 5,750 yards – pushes the par up to a 75. Four of the last five holes at Hallamshire are par 5s for women playing off the Reds, including the long 15th, which is more than 500 yards.

What is the course like and what are the best holes?
With tree-lined fairways, plenty of sand traps and thick rough in places, Hallamshire Golf Club will provide a proper test of golf to players of all abilities.
The course is split into two distinct areas which Hallamshire themselves call the ‘Flat Nine’ and the ‘Hills Nine’. The former incorporates the opening four holes and the last five, with the ‘Hills Nine’ including holes 5 through 13, and you can really understand why!
The first four might make you think you’re in for an easy walk, but that changes when you see the hill you have to walk up on the 5th, and then back down on 6 and 7, before rising up again to the highest point of the course on the 8th and 9th. You are on the edge of the Peak District, don’t forget!

The 7th (which you can see above) is a cracking hole, but one where you might come unstuck if you haven’t played it before. It is only just over 300 yards, and driver definitely is not the play, as the fairway cambers from left to right, and downhill towards plenty of trouble.
I took 2-iron and hit a cut (not on purpose!) which stopped in the first cut on the right hand side, but I was certainly worried as it set off through the air. The green sits below you, but it is receptive to a lofted club. A good par, and an even better birdie if you can snatch one on 7!
On the back nine, there are two par 3s which are really getable! We put the Nearest The Pins on the 12th and 17th, both of which are less than 125 yards from the Yellow tees, and both of which are great short holes.
The quintet of par 3s are all sublime at Hallamshire, and that includes the downhill 6th. Playing from an elevated tee, you have to hit a good shot to find the putting surface. Anything mishit has the possibility of finding the thick stuff, situated in front of the green, as you can see below…

What about the off-course facilities?
It might not have a full-length driving range, but there is plenty of practice space at Hallamshire. Between the 1st and 18th holes, and just a short walk from the clubhouse, lies a short game area with two greens and two bunkers. There is also a putting green by the clubhouse, and two practice nets which are on the walk from the car park and clubhouse down to the first tee.
When you’ve finished your round, the clubhouse is the perfect place to relax with a pint of whatever your tipple is in hand. There are several rooms inside, including the general bar which faces out onto the 18th, overlooking the final green, along with an outdoor seating area with several tables – perfect for an evening drink while the sun sets over the moors in the background.
The clubhouse also has an ode to its most famous son – Matt Fitzpatrick – in the bar area, with replicas of his US Amateur and US Open trophies, both of which Sheffield’s finest won at the Country Club at Brookline.
