Luffenham Heath: Remote, untouched, and full of lush green backdrops on every hole

Why we would rather be playing this remote heathland course in Rutland County

Renowned for its firm fairways and quick greens, Luffenham Heath is a real thinking-player’s course and requires accuracy and good ball striking throughout the round.

The rough is thick and hard to escape and only shots from the short stuff are likely to hold the greens, which puts a premium on straight hitting.

Just a few miles away from Luffenham is the handsome and historic town of Stamford, as well as the A1. Visitors would be well advised to take advantage of both its excellent transport links and also Stamford’s accommodation and restaurants.

The Club is also well into a bunker renovation programme with the help of course architect Jonathan Gaunt, which includes a brand new green complex on the 4th.

History

Luffenham Heath was founded in 1909 by Gilbert Heathcote-Drummond-Willoughby, 2nd Earl of Ancaster, and opened in 1911 with a celebrity match between James Braid & Harry Vardon.

Most recently, some 15 years ago, Martin Hawtree was called in to add new tees, rebuild the bunkers and extend a couple of greens. The result is that ‘little’ Luffenham Heath is actually quite meaty these days: it measures 6,560 yards to a miserly par of 70.

What makes it special

Luffenham Heath is set in a SSSI site, and is the only GEO accredited golf course in the whole of Leicestershire – with this comes an abundance of rare flowers and wildlife.

The course is almost like an oasis; it’s remote, untouched and full of lush green backdrops on every hole.

Where does it rank?

193rd in GB&I, 96th in England, 6th in East Midlands

Where is it?

The Club is located in between Leicester and Peterborough on the A6121 in the town of South Luffenham.
