Hallamshire: Perfection on the edge of the Peak District

Why we’d rather be playing this stunning layout sitting on the edge of the Peak District…

Hallamshire Golf Club

Sitting almost as the buffer between Sheffield and the Peak District, Hallamshire Golf Club is one of the finest inland layouts in the north of England.

The Steel City is just a few miles to the east, while the rolling hills of the Peak District, which can be seen from the clubhouse windows, are in the opposite direction.

It is a course that has two distinct section. There is the flat, heathland section which starts and ends the course, while the layout becomes much hillier through its run around the turn.

History

Local newspaper proprietor Christopher Leng was the man behind the original layout at Hallamshire, with the history of the golf club dating back to the latter years of the 19th Century.

Within a decade, the course had been rated highly enough to host the annual Yorkshire Championships, with Harry Colt then coming to Hallamshire in 1912 to redesign and change the layout to what we know today.

Shortly before the Second World War, Colt then brought his incredible design talents to Hallamshire once more, introducing the signature 6th hole among several other changes, working alongside partners Alison and Morrison.

What makes Hallamshire Golf Club special?

First of all, the views. Take a moment to enjoy the rolling moorlands of the Peak District from the clubhouse window before you take to the course.

It is a course that also offers up different golfing landscapes throughout. There is the ‘Flat 9’ that members play of an evening when they only have a couple of hours. This incorporates the opening run of holes, before turning to the closing stretch.

In between those, you get the sense that you are right on the edge of the Peak District, starting with the fall away towards the 7th green, before the course rises up to its highest point around the turn!

Where is Hallamshire Golf Club?

Hallamshire Golf Club is just a few miles to the west of the city of Sheffield, while the edge of the Peak District is only a couple of miles further on. The A57, which runs from Liverpool to Lincoln via Sheffield and Manchester, is just a mile north of the golf club. Along with Sheffield, the likes of Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham are all within 40 miles of Hallamshire.

Sheffield Station is only four miles from the golf club, with a wide range of services and destinations. Thanks to its proximity to both cities, Hallamshire is within 90 minutes of both Leeds Bradford Airport and Manchester Airport.
