The best courses in Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) can cost a lot, but there are some gems that you can play for under £150!
The price of a standard rack rate green fee at some of the best venues in the United Kingdom these days pushes past £500, which is too much for some (understandably!)
However, playing golf at some of the country’s finest does not need to break the bank! There are plenty of golf courses up and down GB&I where you can get much more value for money.
From inland pleasures, to classic links layouts, the NCG Top 100s Tour can offer plenty of venues in the top 100 of the GB&I rankings for less than £150.

Which venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I list can you play for less than £150?
Notts Golf Club, or Hollinwell, as it is more commonly known, is one of the finest versions of heathland golf in England. Situated in the heart of Nottinghamshire, it is a visual delight, as well as a golfing delight. The venue played host to the John Player Classic throughout the early 1970s, for what was the biggest prize in tournament golf at the time.

Winding its way around the bay, and sitting at the mouth of the Dovey Estuary, Aberdovey is one of those places that you simply have to play golf at some point in your life. James Braid designed the original layout, with Harry Colt and Herbert Fowler making modifications – not a bad threesome to have on the club’s resume!

Often described as the ‘toughest par 69 in the world’, Royal St David’s certainly presents a challenge for all golfers, no matter their handicaps. Sitting in the shadows of the glorious Harlech Castle, expect strong winds coming off the Irish Sea, and a fantastic par 3 to finish your round!

A sublime and picturesque inland course in the heart of Nottinghamshire, Sherwood Forest is one of those venues that all golfers want to play. Another venue that can boast about Harry Colt and James Braid as the men to have designed and worked on the course throughout its history.

Arguably the greatest inland course in the United Kingdom, the Hotchkin Course at Woodhall Spa makes you think about every shot. Deep bunkers line the fairways, while the green complexes are sublime. The venue is also the home of England Golf.

One of Fife’s finest links courses, and there are a lot… The Golf House Club, Elie is iconic thanks to the periscope on the starters’ hut, allowing you see up to the 1st fairway from the tee box which sits next to the clubhouse.

Conwy is the finest course on the North Wales coastline, and the third oldest in Wales behind only Rhyl and Tenby. With the backdrop of Conwy Mountain, and looking out over the bay, it is an enchanting place to play golf. You’ll also following in the footsteps of the world’s best amateurs, with the venue playing host to the Curtis Cup in 2021.

Affectionately known as Pulborough due to its location, the West Sussex Golf Club is stunning. Situated in the South Downs, the course winds its way through heather-clad holes, with trees and ponds to avoid as well. Opened in 1931, it remains one of the best inland courses in the country.

Moortown is one of several stunning golf courses in and around the Yorkshire city of Leeds, but it is the only one of those that can say that they have hosted the sport’s biggest match play competition. The Ryder Cup’s history began in 1927, with the first edition of the event being held at the Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts. Two years later, Moortown played host to the first Ryder Cup on European soil. It has since gone on to also host the Senior Open Championship and the Brabazon Trophy as well!

Located in the southwestern corner of England, the Trevose Golf & Country Club is a pristine links course overlooking the Celtic Sea and Atlantic Ocean. It has hosted the European Legends Tour on three occasions in the last decade, along with playing host to the Brabazon Trophy this century as well.

The old course in the town, Machrihanish has been around for 150 years. Originally founded as a 10-holer in 1876 by Old Tom Morris, JH Taylor and Guy Campbell then added and improved holes to turn it into the epic course it is today. The first tee shot is as daunting and exhilarating as anywhere on the planet!

Coming some 135 years after its neighbour, Machrihanish Dunes is the new version of links golf. The layout it set in a Site of Specific Scientific Interest, meaning that David McLay Kidd had to work with the dunes and do very little to change the way the course would look in its setting – the result is a world-class layout!

In the category of the new version of American links-style courses, Dundonald Links is more than just a golf course. Thanks to its on-site accommodation, it is now the perfect base for a golf trip to the Ayrshire coastline. In the last decade, the layout has played host to both the men’s and women’s Scottish Opens, hosting the latter eight times since 2015.
