Fleetwood: A proper links on the Flyde Coast

Why we’d rather be playing this beautiful true links in North West England

Fleetwood Golf Club

If you’re looking to play golf on the Fylde Coast, there are plenty of options. However, if you want a true links experience, then Fleetwood Golf Club has to be your first call.

Further south, you have the likes of Royal Lytham & St Anne’s, St Anne’s Old Links and plenty more incredible golf courses. North of Blackpool, Fleetwood is the best you will find.

The course plays on glorious links turf, with five holes playing along the coastline. It also offers up stunning views of the Irish Sea, this is a true links golf experience.

History

Fleetwood’s history of golf dates back more than 160 years. Officers from the barracks began playing the game in 1861, next to the rifle ranges that were on site.

The current location is the third that Fleetwood Golf Club has operated on. Opened in 1932, Fleetwood Golf Club is a true links offering that was designed by James Steer, and it is the only links course on the Fylde Coast.

What makes Fleetwood Golf Club special?

The views from almost every part of the course are incredible. The Irish Sea provides an incredible backdrop, particularly as the sun is setting in the west.

Fleetwood is not your typical out-and-back routing for a links course. It plays with the front nine along the coastline and the back nine more inland. Five holes (from 3 through 7) feature the Irish Sea and the Fylde Coast on their left side.

Thanks to that, the prevailing wind makes playing at Fleetwood a challenge. Once you’ve played there, you will want to come back to try and conquer the links once more.

Where is it?

Fleetwood Golf Club is one of several incredible links courses on the northwest coastline of England. Looking out over the Irish Sea, the course is just a few miles from Blackpool.
