There are many stunning versions of hilltop golf around the United Kingdom, and without a doubt, Cleeve Hill is one of the finest!
Just like Kington and Appleby, Cleeve Hill offers panoramic views of its location thanks to its elevated nature, thus making it a place every golfer should visit at least once.
Less than 50 miles from the English-Welsh border, Cleeve Hills is one of the highest places in the Cotswolds, and Old Tom Morris worked his magic on this land well over a century ago.
History
Old Tom Morris – a winner of the Open Championship four times in the tournament’s first decade – was the designer of the original layout at Cleeve Hill.
The course dates back to the late 19th Century, with the layout opening officially in 1891. Morris’ design had to incorporate the several quarries that sit around the property.
Those quarries, which have been there for years, lead to dips and gorges on certain holes, adding to the character of the course.
What makes Cleeve Hill Golf Club special?
There are several reasons as to why playing at Cleeve Hill is special, and none more so than its location and the views. Thanks to its hilltop setting, golfers enjoy panoramic views of the Cotswolds throughout a round.
However, you cannot let that distract you, as the elements will come into play as well! The hilltop setting might offer the views, but it also means that you are at the mercy of the wind and rain (not that we get much of that in the UK) when you take on Cleeve Hill…
