Forget Ayrshire, Yorkshire or Kent. There is one region of England that has strong claims as the very best for golf, when it comes to spend and quality.

Famed for tourist attractions like Alnwick Castle, which was the filming location for Hogwarts in some of the Harry Potter movies, and its giant football clubs, the North East has also been a vibrant place to visit. But did you know about there world class golf courses?
What makes this region stand out above others, to a lot of golfers, is the affordability. Despite a lack of Open venues compared to other parts of the UK, there is an argument to say it may be the best value golf destination in the country.

“I think the overarching message for anybody thinking about doing this, it is such good value,” Irwin said speaking on the 48 Hours In The North East YouTube video. “You could do the whole trip for the same price as going to play a Prestwick or a Western Gailes or Royal Troon, once.
“Now it is a different experience. It’s not the birthplace of The Open but the quality of links golf here is just unreal. “
After travelling up from a run of trophy courses and Open venues, NCG Top 100s host Tom Irwin admitted he arrived with some doubts.
“Truth be told, I was quite worried going up here this week (to the North East),” Irwin added. “I was concerned that we have been to all these trophy hotspots and we’ve been doing Open venues and goodness knows what else. This is our first departure from any of that carry on.
“I really wanted it to be good because I’ve been coming up here for years and I’m so pleased that the golf courses have stood up. I think they have even exceeded expectations, in all cases.”

“Dunstaburgh is possibly a bit of a relief and more like a resort course. But Seaton Carew, in particular, is definitely a Championship test. Dunbar has got just as much ‘wow’ factor and romance as any of the highlighted places. Then there is Goswick which comes with an assurance of quality being an Open qualifying venue.”
