Marco Dawson stuns big names at Sunningdale

Who won what & where: Willett wins in a weekend of surprises

European Tour – European Masters: Danny Willett

Willett moved into second place in the Race to Dubai after his second win of the season. The Sheffield player, who impressed at St Andrews last week, went bogey free with a five-under 65 to edge past Matt Fitzpatrick.

Tyrrell Hatton made it an English hat-trick with a closing 62.

Willett’s second-round 62 did the bulk of the damage and he had three straight birdies midway through his final round.

What he said: “Matt played some great golf and really kept the pressure on me. But it probably made it a bit easier to be honest, because it meant I could not lose concentration even for a minute. I knew I had to keep attacking and committing fully to shots.

Two wins and good performances in Majors and Golf Championships is more than I could have hoped for really.”

European Senior Tour – Senior Open: Marco Dawson

Twelve months ago Bernhard Langer won this Championship by 13 shots at Royal Porthcawl, this year he was held off by Floridian Marco Dawson.

The pair both covered Sunningdale Old in 64 shots as Dawson knocked in putts of 25 feet at 15, for an eagle, and the last for a birdie to just get home.

The 51-year-old played in three Majors before turning 50 and this was his second Senior Open. He has one victory on the Champions Tour and will now play in next year’s Open Championship at Troon.

What he said: “I can’t tell you how many hours I put in on the range and I’ve had two back surgeries to prove it. I’ve spent a lot of time on the range and on the putting green over the years, and you know, it’s a little later than most of the guys, but it came true.

When I had a good first round and a good second, I thought, OK, maybe this is going to happen again. I said we’ll just keep on making the swings and try and make the putts. That’s what it comes down to. I just made one more putt than Bernhard.”

PGA Tour – Canadian Open: Jason Day

After the near misses of Chambers Bay and St Andrews Jason Day pocketed his second win of the season, by a shot from a fast-finishing Bubba Watson and two from home hope David Hearn.

The Australian rolled in a 22-footer at the 72nd hole for a third straight birdie and he is now up to fourth in the world. No.3 Watson was even stronger down the home stretch, with birdies at five of the last six while Hearn, bidding to become the first Canadian to win the national Open in 61 years could only put together a level-par 72.

What he said: “To be able to put yourself in contention so many times, especially in major events and just fall short, even going back to last week leaving the putt short and not being able to get into the play-off really kind of was disappointing.

So when I actually had the same putt, it was a very similar putt on the 72nd hole. Same things were going through my mind. Make sure you get it to the hole. Fortunately enough for me, it was quick enough to where I just needed to get it on the line. If I got it on the line, it was perfect.”

"I can’t tell you how many hours I put in on the range and I’ve had two back surgeries to prove it" – Marco Dawson Ladies European Tour – Scottish Open: Rebecca Artis

The Australian began the final round at Dundonald Links six shots behind Suzann Pettersen but then produced one of the rounds of the season, a six-under 66 on a wet and windy day.
The next best score on the day was a 69 but Artis reeled off seven birdies, three on the trot from the 12th, to stun the leaders. Pettersen needed a birdie at the last to tie but came up short, finding water, and dropping a shot.
England’s Holly Clyburn was third with Lydia Ko in a tie for fourth.

What she said: “Sometimes you fight all your life to try and get that first win and sometimes the second win is maybe even harder. I’ve been playing some really consistent golf since the start of the year, putting myself in contention week in, week out. I knew that with the conditions the way they were predicted to be that if I went out and played some solid golf, then I wouldn’t be far away.”

LPGA Tour – Meijer LPGA Classic: Lexi Thompson
A first victory for Thompson since becoming a Major champion at the Kraft in 2014 and she did it in style with eight birdies on Sunday.
The American was four adrift but picked up six shots in seven holes from the 4th and her 65 was just enough to beat Gerina Piller and Lizette Salas.

Challenge Tour – Le Vaudreuil Challenge: Ryan Fox
The New Zealander, the son of All Blacks rugby legend Grant Fox, completed a wire-to-wire victory in France with a birdie at the 72nd hole.
The 28-year-old led by three after three rounds but then had to take advantage of the finishing par 5 to see off France’s Thomas Linard.
He is the first Kiwi to win on the Challenge Tour since Gareth Paddison back in 2007, a victory which also came on French soil.

What he said: “This trip is my first time to Europe and I have played well. France was my dad’s favourite place to tour when he was playing with the All Blacks. I think it’s the same for me. It’s my favourite place in the world at the moment.
It was a tough day. Conditions were pretty awful through the middle of the round with the rain and the wind.”
