We gave the team at NCG carte blanche in the run-up to Christmas. No matter what it is, we wanted to know what everyone would like to happen in our sport in 2026.
It could be anything too, not just the stock, boring answer of: the best players playing against each other every week. Bore off.
From Open venues to the World Handicap System, from gripes about professional golfers talking nonsense to club hackers wearing unacceptable headwear, our team has delivered a wide variety of wishes that they would like granted across the next 12 months.
Rory McIlroy has even won the Masters now, so that is something we no longer need to anguish over. We need new players to root for, and to think outside of the box this time.
Once you have read what our staff would like to happen in 2026, why don’t you write your own requests in the comments section?

I would love to see Carnoustie, Lytham, Muirfield and Turnberry all restored to the Open rota – or at least given significant encouragement – by the R&A by the end of the year. Why? Simply because they are all great venues and the Open is better for them being back involved.

Two things. Both feel incredibly unlikely. The first is that the World Handicap System finally starts to settle down in Great Britain & Ireland. We’re five years in now, it’s not going to be ditched, and it’s just time we start making the best of it.
But if the rest of GB&I adopt the Irish trial on Playing Handicaps, it’s going to be another interesting year.
The second is that the equally tedious standoff in men’s professional golf is also settled.

I want Tommy Fleetwood to win a major. The 2025 season ended too soon, and I hope he carries his career-best form into 2026.
And I want golfers to stop saying things in public, then claiming they’ve been taken out of context when someone has an issue with it.

Following another near miss at the Masters in 2025, where he lost out in a playoff to Rory McIlroy, I would love to see Justin Rose get his hands on another major championship.
He might well be the old boy of the pack now, but over the last 18 months, he has played some of the best golf of his career – including being part of another victorious Ryder Cup team on away soil.
I think, for many, a Justin Rose major victory would be the highlight of 2026!

First and foremost, a lifetime ban for anyone who wears those hats WITH THE BIG OBNOXIOUS CAPITALS ACROSS THE FRONT.
I have fallen out of love with the average tour event and only really watch the bigger ones now. With that in mind, an announcement that The Open is going back to Royal Lytham. Also – that Aaron Rai stops wearing two gloves.

Restructuring of golf club committees to 6 to 8 people only: Finance greens and head greenkeeper, house including bar and catering, match and handicap, golf club manager, president, and club captain.
