The outsiders to keep an eye on at the US Open

We’ve looked at the market leaders. Now it’s time to turn attention to the players who could make a splash at Pebble Beach at a big price…

US Open outside bets

You’ve seen my tips for who I think will win at Pebble Beach, now here are my US Open outside bets for you to mull over…

US Open outside bets: Kevin Na (125/1)

I was a bit surprised to see the recent Charles Schwab Challenge winner floating at a three-figure price.

Firstly, the manner of his victory at Colonial was incredibly impressive – a final round 66 sucking the life out of the chasing pack from an early stage to collect his third PGA Tour victory.

Secondly, he’s got some decent form in the bank in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He didn’t play this year’s renewal but was 20th in 2018 and has two other top 10s since 2012.

Wisely withdrew from Memorial to take in his achievement at Colonial and should be fresh and ready for the US Open challenge. It hasn’t been his favourite major by any means, and he missed the cut at Pebble when the US Open was last here in 2010.

But he has made the weekend every year he’s played it since 2011.

Seventh at Oakmont three years ago, we should have decent hopes of a good week for a player who has made 12 of 15 cuts on the PGA Tour this year with four top 25s and three top 10s.

US Open outside bets: Brandt Snedeker (100/1)

This formidable putter has been up and down for a couple of years now but his best form this season has coincided with some big tournaments.

Tied for 5th at The Players, helped by a third-round 65, he then shot an eye-catching 69 at Bethpage Black on the final day to cement a place in the top 20.

He followed that up with a similar week at the Charles Schwab – finishing with rounds of 67, 68 and 69 after an opening 74.

Tied for 8th when Pebble last hosted the US Open in 2010, he’s since won the Pro-Am in both 2013 and 2015 and finished in the top 5 at that event as recently as two years ago.

He seems to enjoy the test of America’s national championship, having posted five top 10s in the tournament.

Snedeker has traditionally always enjoyed poa annua greens and could easily defy this three-figure price.

US Open outside bets: Graeme McDowell (125/1)

Graeme McDowell wins US Open at Pebble Beach

Back to the scene of his greatest triumph, a small each-way investment on the Northern Irishman – or at least a look at the top 20 and make the cut markets – might not be the worst way to spend your cash.

McDowell needs some fireworks. He’s still not in the field at Royal Portrush yet and the motivation to play his home town course has already seen him secure his PGA Tour playing privileges for the next two years with victory at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship.

All right, so it’s hardly the US Open but he followed that with a top 10 at the Texas Open and has then performed solidly at the PGA Championship.

He came back to Pebble in February for the Pro-Am and landed inside the top 20 and there are much worse bets at the price.
