I’m struggling to accept that Sergio Garcia (40/1, 7 places) is a 40/1 shot in a field as weak as this, but it’s probably deserved given his form of late.
The Spaniard has missed three of his last four cuts and his best finish since March has been 8th place at the Open de France.
I personally think Garcia will be given a wildcard pick regardless of his form, but he must be feeling the heat at the moment and he’d like to pull out a good performance just to put his mind at ease.
Where better to do that than here at Sedgefield, a golf course that Garcia loves and has won on six years ago.
In four starts here, he has registered three top four finishes, with his most recent effort 29th in 2013.
Garcia is currently 131st in the FedEx standings and needs to finish inside of the top 125 after this week to ensure he gets a spot next week at The Northern Trust.
Hopes of a Ryder Cup spot are probably unrealistic at this point, but a win here for Graeme McDowell (66/1, 8 places) would give Captain Bjorn a little to think about.
The Northern Irishman has been adamant that he’s playing well enough, it’s just a case of taking it to the golf course.
He’s made his last five cuts but the performance that stood out recently was 17th at the RBC Canadian Open. Glen Abbey is a bomber’s paradise and it’s well known that McDowell is one of the shorter hitters on the circuit.
In theory, the shorter layout of Sedgefield should really suit his eye a lot more than the majority of other courses on the PGA Tour. Given he finished fifth on debut here two years ago, it suggests that that’s very much the case.
Remember, only the top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings get into next week’s event. McDowell is currently 143rd and needs a big week to progress.
He’s a proven winner at this level, so the 66/1 looks a little generous for a classy player who has been playing nicely for a while now and has an extra bit of motivation.
