Women's British Open: Solheim hopefuls miss the cut

Charley Hull led a host of big names to miss the cut and the 17-year-old will now need a captain’s pick to make the Solheim Cup team.

The teenager burst onto the LET scene with five straight second places but, despite her brilliants efforts, she will finish outside the automatic spots after adding a 72 to her first-day 76.

Sweden’s Camilla Lennarth was another to miss out having led after the first day. Then she birdied the 18th in the third last group out but Friday was a different story.

Still well within the mark she then found the road at the 17th en route to a quadruple bogey and three putt the last for an 82.

Still well within the mark Lennarth then found the road at the 17th en route to a quadruple bogey Italy’s Giulia Sergas was another who could have done with a last reminder to captain Lotte Neumann but she also finished at plus four while Jodi Ewart Shadoff was one worse after a 73.

Solheim stalwarts Laura Davies and Sophie Gustafason also failed to make the weekend and you would think that their race is run.

Carlota Ciganda’s place is safe in the side for a fortnight but she was unable to do any better than an 81 and finished at 11 over.

Michelle Wie did make it though, a closing birdie moving her back to level and she will be desperate for a big weekend and some good news from captain Mallon at the end of it.
