History makers! Thompson and Korda to become PGA Tour firsts

The LPGA Tour stars are set to do something that’s never been done at the QBE Shootout

They’re two of the biggest stars on the LPGA Tour with a ton of game to match. And now, in a historic moment for women’s golf, Lexi Thompson and Nelly Korda are set to team up and become the first ever female-pairing at the PGA Tour’s QBE Shootout.

Holding an impressive 18 LPGA Tour titles between them, Thompson and Korda will battle it out against a host of PGA Tour stalwarts at the co-sanctioned team event including Jason Day, Max Homa, Billy Horschel and Matt Kuchar.

While Thompson has competed in the tournament before – which takes places in December at Tiburon in Florida – this will be Korda’s first appearance, with the link up between the Solheim Cup teammates signalling the first female pairing in the competition’s history.

“We are thrilled with the field announced today,” said QBE Shootout CEO, Todd Jones. “The quality of the players competing makes for an exciting event, and I am particularly pleased that two LPGA stars – Lexi Thompson and Nelly Korda – will join the field in Naples.”

This is not the first time Lexi Thompson and Nelly Korda will be making history either. Having tee’d up at the Solheim Cup in 2013, Thompson became the youngest American to represent her nation at just 18-years-old.

Korda is then the longest-tenured American to hold the World No 1 spot in the Rolex Rankings, and also boasts a Gold Medal to her name having secured the feat at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

The QBE Shootout is an unofficial money event on the PGA Tour, played over three-days, and using a scramble format. The tournament was co-created by Greg Norman in 1989, who has since been disassociated with the event due to his involvement with LIV Golf.
