PGA Tour CEO Jay Monahan announces return date from medical situation

After a number of weeks away, PGA Tour CEO Jay Monahan has announced the date he’ll return to his post.

July 17, the first day of Open Championship week, is the date Monahan marked in a memo released on Friday. It will be over a month since temporarily leaving his role on June 13 due to a medical situation.

“Thank you for your support and leadership these last few weeks,” Monahan wrote. “With the support of my family and thanks to world-class medical care, my health has improved dramatically.

“I am eager to engage with each of you – as well as our players, partners, fans and our PGA Tour family – to address any questions and protect the game we treasure.”

Monahan took this brief period of leave shortly after joining Public Investment Fund chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan in a television interview to reveal a stunning deal to join forces.

Along with the DP World Tour, all parties agreed to end litigation proceedings and strike a relationship to “unify the game of golf on a global basis.”

“A fair and objective process” to allow players to re-apply for PGA Tour and the DP World Tour memberships was another standout feature of the deal.

After this groundbreaking announcement, Monahan came under fire from some players in an intense meeting at the RBC Canadian Open – the event that was about to get underway at the time of the news.

He was also criticised by 9/11 Families United who described Monahan and the PGA as “paid Saudi shills,” having alluded to the sentiment of the 9/11 attacks when speaking about LIV Golf only last year.

The 53-year-old, who has been the PGA Tour commissioner for six years, will continue as its commissioner under the ‘NewCo’ umbrella, while Al-Rumayyan will become chairman and join the tour’s policy board.
