Tiger Woods set to return after his disastrous US Open

Greenbrier Classic betting tips and Fantasy Golf picks

Bubba Watson was the big winner in the previous weeks Fantasy Golf, the two-time Masters Champion taking the win and the big points on offer.

Jordan Spieth still remains the form player despite his absence. The US Open winner is not likely to feature at Greenbriers so a transfer may be a wise choice.

It’s not the strongest field – with the Open right around the corner, so it may be worthwhile banking on the few big names on offer as stars start St. Andrews preparations. Patrick Reed and Bubba Watson both taking the field, and may be worth a punt.

We have had very little movement at the top of the overall Fantasy leaderboard with Cuetipuk taking the mantle from Viking Valdemar. Expect little change at least until the Open gets underway.

Last year we saw Angel Cabrera post back-to back 64s to win his first PGA Tour win in the States outside of the Majors.

The Argentine birdied 11 and 12 and then holed out for eagle at the next to open up a three-shot lead, then stumbled with a pair of bogeys, but found the green at the 616-yard 17th to sneak home by two.

This year the Argentine is a different proposition, being offered by the bookies at 100/1.

Might be one for an outside each-way bet this time around.

Cabrera’s nearest challenger was George McNeill who closed with a nine-under 61 which included a front-nine run of five 3s before then knocking in his tee shot at the 8th.

In an unfortunate turn of events, McNeill then found out after his round that his older sister had died of cancer earlier in the day.

A steady 40/1 for the 39-year old, he is definitely one to watch this time around.

The PGA Tour only arrived here in 2011 and the Old White course was immediately on people’s radar thanks to Stuart Appleby’s closing 59.

At the time he became just the fifth player to shoot such a score, Jim Furyk added to the list two years ago at the BMW Championship.

Other winners of the tournament are Scott Stallings, Ted Potter Jr and Jonas Blixt before Cabrera’s weekend heroics 12 months ago. Stallings and Blixt are available at 150/1 and 100/1 respectively.

This year we see Tiger Woods (50/1) making his second visit to the event.

He missed the cut in 2012 and he will be looking to finally kickstart a year that reads MC-WD-T17-T69-71 and the MC at Chambers Bay.

Which doesn’t look too disastrous until you throw in three rounds in the 80s.

We’d advise steering clear of the 14-time Major winner.

Bubba Watson, fresh from his win at the Travelers, also tees it up at a course that he keeps a summer home at and he is yet to break into the top 15 despite showing plenty of promise with eight rounds in the 60s from his two previous efforts.

Bubba is the 10/1 favourite to take back-to-back PGA Tour titles.

US Open runner-up Louis Oosthuizen (30/1) also plays but we’ll go for Webb Simpson at 25/1 as our first selection.

The former US Open champ has recorded three top 10s in four visits and was third last year and he led after three rounds in 2013.

Simpson was tied for second at Quail Hollow last month so is some sort of decent form.

Next up Keegan Bradley (again) at 25/1, who you suspect is bubbling away with consistent finishes in the top 30 and he claimed a share of fourth in 2014 with rounds of 67-69-69-66.

Finally we’ll take a punt on Pat Perez at 50/1, sixth in 2014 and someone who may benefit from not being scarred by the USGA and Chambers Bay.

Perez has made his last seven cuts, four of which were top 20s.

Whoever does come out on top, history tells us, that he may well come from behind.

No 54-hole leader is yet to win the Greenbrier and three of the five champions have rallied from at least four shots back.

Worth considering a few strong finishers if our tips haven’t peaked your fancy.

Finally there are another four spots up for grabs at St Andrews so expect some serious jostling come the weekend with opportunities become more scarce for that St. Andrews ticket.
