East Midlands: Golf festival returns to holiday village

Thorpeness is to host its second annual Festival of Golf in the heart of one of Britain’s most quirky seaside villages.

The inaugural festival, launched last year, was the first of its kind ever staged in East Anglia and will again be held over the 93-year-old Thorpeness course, which was designed by five-time Open champion James Braid.

General manager Ajay Anthony said: “Thorpeness is an ideal destination for a summer golf festival, a quintessential seaside village with a great course, surrounded by outstanding natural beauty.”

The three-day festival begins on July 29 and golfers which enter the festival will take part in individual and team competitions, evening entertainment, events and coaching clinics with European Tour coach Bill Ferguson – who worked with Colin Montgomerie.

A Leicestershire golfer has enjoyed a golfing trip to the USA when he played a tournament in Dallas Texas.

The Armed Forces veteran only took up golf after losing his arm while in Afghanistan, but has enjoyed considerable success in his new venture, playing international matches against American wounded servicemen.

Speaking to the Leicester Mercury, Swain said: “It was a fantastic trip and extremely enjoyable playing golf, meeting people and telling them about Battle Back Golf and the American Freedom of Heroes initiatives.

“Golf has changed my life and brought me so many great opportunities in the time since I was injured.”

Branston’s sun safety day

Derbyshire’s Branston is working hard to keep its staff safe in the sun.

The club organised a sun safety and skin cancer prevention briefing for its staff, with the aid of Dr Natalie Jinks.

She told the Derby Telegraph: “People don’t realise how damaging over-exposure to the sun’s ultra violet rays or those from the sun can be.”

Charnwood creates mini course for children

Charnwood in Loughborough has created a nine-hole mini-course for children.

The work was part of a £32,000 renovation of the complex, with director Peter Spender saying they wanted to provide somewhere to help local people get active.

The project was helped by Lloyds Bank’s participation in the Government-backed Funding for Lending Scheme.

Funding boost will see floodlights installed at course

The six-hole junior course at Northampton is to be upgraded with the purchase of 10 portable floodlights, which will allow the hours of play to be extended.

The upgrades have been enabled by a grant of £11,373 from Barclays.

Head junior coach Mark Norton said: “It’s vital the club continues to evolve with modern day demands. This Barclays funding will allow us to deliver mid-week twilight coaching that we wouldn’t otherwise have been able to. we are also aiming to establish links with local schools and communities as well as extending the golf season with portable floodlights.”

Junior Pro-Am at Norwood Park

A junior pro-am tournament is being held at Norwood Park, the Sport Nottinghamshire Club of the Year.

It will be the first time the club has hosted a junior ProAm team event, which will take place on September 1 and see PGA Pros team up with three club juniors.
