Tommy ‘Two Gloves’ Gainey put behind his off-course distractions to record his first win since 2012 on the Korn Ferry Tour

Tommy Gainey

A little over a month after being arrested for allegedly soliciting prostitution Tommy ‘Two Gloves’ Gainey returned to the winner’s circle for the first time since 2012.

The victory came on the Korn Ferry Tour in the season opener in the Bahamas and he finished with a hat-trick of birdies for a 69 and a four-shot victory. His last win came on the PGA Tour in 2012 when he beat David Toms by a shot at the McGladrey Classic, before that he won twice on the Korn Ferry in 2010.

Otherwise it has been a bleak period with not even a top 10 on either tour since 2015 and this was his first appearance since his arrest last month.

“With the injuries that I’ve been through, the other troubles that I’ve had, I’m very lucky and very blessed,” Gainey said. “This means everything. I definitely didn’t expect it this week. The last time I played here [in 2017] I shot 87-84. But it’s a new year, new tournament. I just had to be patient.”

In a week that began with no mention of Camilo Villegas’ return to action on the same tour there was equally no reference to Gainey’s ‘misdemeanour’ on the PGA Tour’s website.

Gainey was one of 124 arrested in an investigation titled “Operation Santa’s Naughty List.” He will appear in court on February 6 in Florida.
