Before we answer the question of when is the 2022 Open Championship, allow us to give you a brief insight into the history of golf’s first major.
On 17 October 1860, eight professional golfers assembled at Prestwick for a tournament to determine who would be the Champion Golfer.
The winner was to receive the Challenge Belt, a prize crafted from red Moroccan leather and worth £25 – around £3,000 in today’s money. The competitors played three rounds of 12 holes, with Willie Park Snr beating Old Tom Morris by two shots. A year later, Prestwick announced that the tournament shall be open to all the world.
Harry Vardon has won the most Open Championships, amassing six in total, while Peter Thomson and Tom Watson have gathered five apiece.

The Open has always been played in Scotland or England – with the exception of 1951 and 2019 when it was played at Royal Portrush. It will return to Northern Ireland in 2025.
